Last week reminded me why I love the intersection of communications, public affairs, and purpose. It’s easy to think communications is about telling stories and government relations is about influencing policy. But at their best, they’re really about something much bigger: making sure the voices and experiences of the people we serve are represented where decisions are being made. Over the course of just a few days, I had the privilege of joining Michael D. Smith, President & CEO of Eckerd Connects, as we engaged with leaders across the workforce ecosystem—from thought-provoking conversations at Jobs for the Future (JFF) Horizons Summit, presented by JFF, to inspiring young changemakers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Summit for America’s Youth, to meeting with #PotomacJobCorps Student Government Association leaders, to meetings with members of Congress and congressional staff from both sides of the aisle. We also spent time with partners and organizations helping shape the future of workforce development, including the National Job Corps Association (NJCA), SkillUp Coalition, NPower, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Center on Rural Innovation, COUNCIL FOR ADULT AND EXPERIENTAL LEARNING, Ford Philanthropy, National Skills Coalition, National Association of Workforce Boards, United States Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council and many others. What struck me wasn’t simply the number of meetings. It was the shared recognition that the future of work is changing faster than ever. Artificial intelligence. Skills-based hiring. Family-sustaining wages. National service. Opportunity youth. The need for stronger employer partnerships. These aren’t separate conversations—they’re part of the same challenge. And organizations like Eckerd Connects have a responsibility to help shape the solutions. For nearly 60 years, Eckerd Connects has worked alongside communities to create pathways to education, employment, and economic mobility. Being invited to these conversations isn’t about visibility—it’s about responsibility. Every conversation is an opportunity to ensure that the experiences of the young people, job seekers, families, and communities we serve help inform the policies, partnerships, and investments that will shape the future. I’m grateful to work alongside colleagues, partners, and leaders who believe that lasting systems change happens when diverse voices come together around a shared purpose, including Amy Seusing and Ursula L. Wright. I've been leaving each New Promise of Work conversation with ideas that are shaping the vision we're building together. Here are three from last week's visioning session in Southern California: 1. Work should make a better life possible. People challenged us to think about whether our economy creates jobs that allow people to build the lives they want and make communities stronger in the process. 2. Our systems should start with a belief in people’s talent, potential, and dignity. When we begin there, it changes the questions we ask, the investments we make, and what we expect our public systems to do. 3. Economic opportunity should be real for everyone, no matter where they're from. The common thread: A New Promise of Work should believe in people, and build policies rooted in that belief. Today we convened for the Southern California New Promise of Work Visioning Workshop hosted by the National Skills Coalition. This half-day convening brought together workers, students, workforce and community partners, advocates, and education and training leaders from across Southern California for a thoughtful conversation about what skills training, education, and career pathways should look like in the future. We left inspired and energized to continue advancing NSC’s New Promise of Work initiative—a national effort to engage workers, students, advocates, businesses, and policymakers in shaping a bold, forward-looking workforce policy agenda rooted in what people and communities need to thrive. Thank you to everyone who contributed their perspectives and ideas. Building a stronger, more inclusive workforce starts with listening, collaborating, and reimagining what is possible together.

Great to see Massachusetts continue investing in one of its most successful workforce initiatives: the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund (WCTF). National Skills Coalition recently highlighted the program in our sector partnerships factsheet as a model other states can learn from. On Thursday, Governor Maura Healey signed the state's FY27 budget. We at JVS are thrilled to see that our state policymakers recognize the importance of funding workforce development initiatives, particularly the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund (WCTF) and the MassHire Career Centers, one of which is co-located with JVS in Downtown Boston. As funding for social services fluctuates at the federal level, we are grateful to be in a state that understands the need for services, and ensures funding is available for service providers like JVS and other great organizations across Massachusetts that are doing this important work. NCSL is finally out with our Legislator’s Guide to Workforce Pell. In the report, we summarize the final regs, highlight early implementation findings, and explore roles that legislatures may play. Legislatures were already active this session considering bills on Workforce Pell and our conversations with legislators suggest they will have a greater role to play in supporting the development of their state programs. SUCCESS in El Paso! We launched our 1st Digital Skills Training & Fiber Optics. Congratulations to our graduates who are committed to investing in their future. We had 22 students (3 females) and we have over 40 individuals on our El Paso waitlist. This evening we kick off our 2nd Dallas cohort Orientation with 19 students who are eager to see their return on their investments. We are at capacity and our our waitlist continues to grow past 30 individuals. This group photo demonstrates the power of their hunger for training opportunities, access and connectivity. This is why CARDBoard Project sits at the intersection of policy, workforce, and community implementation. National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) – Connectivity Corps (CPC) allows us to elevate what actually works on the ground, training models, credential pathways, and community partnerships, so policy and funding reinforce each other.
