Opera For All

About us

Opera Montana (formerly Intermountain Opera Bozeman) creates and inspires community and collaboration through world-class opera, musical theatre and educational engagement. IOB produces 3 professional mainstage productions per season: (1) A lesser known or new opera produced on a smaller scale, designed to invite new audiences to the art form; (2) A musical theatre production; and (3) A large scale classic opera. Professional guest artists travel to Montana to perform principal roles and are supported by a chorus made up of local talent. The company also welcomes local schoolchildren to its theatres, and visits local choir classrooms at no cost to schools. In 2023, OM launched its first-ever school tour, "Wheels of Harmony" designed to share Indigenous music, traditional opera, and contemporary works composed by Native American composers with Montana schoolchildren in primarily rural and tribal communities. The tour reached nearly 2,000 students from fourteen schools in two weeks. Opera Montana is committed to the principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do. This requires our dedication to erase inequalities within our organization and the art we produce. We resolve that our organization will be fully anti-discrimination, embracing all people who have been underrepresented on our stages and within our institution. We will be an opera company that depicts, investigates and celebrates the diverse lives and humanity of people and groups who have suffered discrimination and persecution and do our part to address oppression in the arts that continues to this day.

Updates

  • We're excited to announce that we've already raised $1.7M towards a $2.5M campaign goal that will help us Inspire New Audiences, Create a Sustainable Opera Montana, and realize a new operatic adaptation of A River Runs Through It on the occasion of the novella's 50th anniversary. This is our Watershed Moment. Help us write the next chapter!

Last night we celebrated the launch of Opera Montana's first-ever campaign with the threefold goals of Inspiring New Audiences, Creating a Sustainable Opera Montana, and commissioning and premiering an original adaptation of A River Runs Through It. It was such a wonderful coming together of community. With very special thanks to several early contributors, I'm pleased to share that we have already raised $1.7M towards our $2.5M goal. Here's an overview of what we're hoping to do. Thanks to October River Productions for the interviews and edit and to A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT composer Zach Redler for scoring the video. And thanks always to Stillwater Strategy Partners for the guidance.
