Three years ago, we welcomed Katie Clasen to Prelude Ventures. From day one, she brought rare firsthand experience building and deploying energy technologies in the field, with the technical depth and practical perspective that come from doing the work, not just talking about it. Since then, Katie has become an indispensable member of our team. She's helped shape our investment strategy across critical minerals, industrial innovation, AI, and hardtech, while partnering closely with founders tackling some of the toughest challenges in climate. Announcing the first close of our Series B: $134 Million to build the world’s first superhot #geothermal power plant. Backed by nearly all our existing investors, with Prelude Ventures leading the round, we’re welcoming new and strategic investments that include JERA Co., Inc. and Idemitsu Americas Holdings Corporation, two of Japan’s largest energy companies. The Series B equity is the first component of a diverse financing that includes project-level equity and debt. Atom Computing just achieved a major breakthrough. They've become the first company to use neutral-atom technology to demonstrate sustained quantum error correction at scale, meaning their system’s error rates decrease as it scales. That's a fundamental requirement for quantum to move from lab to real-world use. They’ve reached this milestone faster and with greater capital efficiency than other larger companies in the industry, one of only two companies to accomplish this feat. Efficient quantum computers will solve many of the problems critical to mitigating climate change, and Atom Computing is getting us one step closer to meaningfully addressing them. 🚨 Full Quantum Error Correction with Toric Code! 🚨 Today, Atom Computing announced the quantum industry’s first full demonstration of quantum error correction using a toric code! ▪️Operating with many rounds of sustained quantum error correction, Atom demonstrated the reduction of error rates as the code distance increased (i.e. as more physical qubits were used for error correction). ▪️In a neutral-atom first, the full integration of mid-circuit measurement and continuous swapping of data and ancilla qubits enabled logical memory times exceeding the lifetime of the qubits. ▪️This achievement places Atom among only two companies to demonstrate many rounds of sustained quantum error correction, with Atom being the only neutral-atom company. “Today, we have shown that practical quantum error correction can be achieved with our neutral-atom technology. Another invigorating Prelude Summit is in the books! Our 8th annual gathering of climate leaders provided inspiring paths forward and thought-provoking conversations focused on building and solving the biggest challenges of our time. Thank you to all who attended, and a special thanks to the speakers who left us thinking about a few key themes as we head into the second half of the year: - It’s time for the climate industry to use its influence. Climate and clean energy companies have the capital and capacity to show their power on the political stage. It’s time to start using that power to back candidates who support climate-friendly policies and oppose those who do not. - There is excitement in late-stage capital market. The Fervo and X Energy IPOs are huge moments for clean energy. The current AI moment has investors interested in clean energy sources that can be delivered at speed and at low cost. Late-stage companies that can prove they are the tech of choice for meeting data center energy demand will succeed in this market. - AI is dominating the attention of investors and capital markets, and there is a once in a generation opportunity to use this momentum to unlock cheap, abundant power for all. Now is the time to invest in using technology to enhance the grid, maximize the capacity we already have, and scale new clean firm generation including solar + storage and geothermal. Our team will be looking for ways to carry these ideas forward in our day-to-day work. We came away from Napa with clear eyes and excitement for the future of climate technology.

The Prelude Ventures team was out in full force at #SFClimateWeek! To kick things off, we hosted a welcome reception for fellow investors, entrepreneurs, and industry partners driving the commercialization of growth-stage climate companies. We were energized by all of the innovators in the room, talking about how we are building real solutions. Tim Woodward participated in a panel discussion, hosted by Heatmap News’ Katie Brigham with portfolio companies Copper and Lunar Energy, as well as Sunrun. It was an enlightening conversation about virtual power plants, the growing role of distributed energy to ease demand on the grid, and what it’ll take to move VPPs from pilot programs to grid-scale reality. Gabriel Kra was at Heatmap House yesterday speaking with Matthew Nordan at Azolla Ventures, and Susan Su at Toba Capital. The panel included an assembly of viewpoints on the climate technologies that Gabriel and the other investors think are primed to make the biggest impact, and how we’ll get them to scale. It was encouraging to see all of the activity in SF this week around climate!
