One of the most critical components of a building's fire protection system isn't inside the building at all. It's the valve pit that supplies the water flow and pressure needed to support the sprinklers and fire pumps. In this video, our experts Austin Elliott and Emily Martin inspect the valve pit serving an 11-story office building and immediately identify a red flag: standing water. Standing water can indicate inadequate drainage and accelerate corrosion of critical piping and components, increasing the likelihood of failures when the fire protection system is needed most. It’s just debris, how bad could it be? In this roof inspection, our expert Gregory Lanshe explains why it’s important to clear loose debris from your rooftop as high wind season approaches. Clearing debris means water can flow freely through roof drains. Other important actions as hurricane season approaches: ✔ Remove heavy loose items such as concrete blocks or paver stones that can become projectiles or damage the roof membrane during a storm. ✔ Secure small rooftop equipment so it doesn’t topple in a storm, pierce the roof, and become a source of water intrusion. ✔ Consult an engineer to ensure large roof-mounted equipment can withstand expected wind pressures and attachment points will hold.
