Nearly two months into my role at Sovereign AI Fund. We've spent this time building - hiring an investment team, standing up our operations, and putting the right structure in place to move fast once we're fully up and running. Since launching Sovereign AI, one priority has been clear: we need to build deep relationships with the people shaping the future of British AI - wherever they are. The UK’s AI opportunity cannot be concentrated in one city or one ecosystem. Some of the most ambitious founders and most exciting startups are being built across the country. Understanding that opportunity means showing up, listening, and building relationships face-to-face. That is why we went on tour. Since May, our investment team has been travelling right across the UK to embed ourselves in ecosystems, meet founders, connect with investors and researchers, and understand the unique strengths that each part of the country brings to the UK’s AI landscape. In that time, we’ve held events in Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff and Manchester - meeting with hundreds of ambitious founders along the way. Going forward, we’ll continue travelling across the country, meeting the people building the future of AI and investing in the relationships that will shape the next generation of UK technology companies. On Tuesday, we held the official Sovereign AI North West launch in Manchester. 🐝🇬🇧 It was brilliant to have 100+ local founders, investors, academics, researchers, and ecosystem leaders in the room. If Britain is going to build the next generation of globally significant AI companies, it needs this kind of collaboration across the UK’s entire ecosystem. Our Chair, James Wise, set out why this moment matters so much. AI is this generation's defining technology, and the UK starts from a position of real strength: world-class research, some early successes and increasing sovereign capabilities. However, now is the time to turn those strengths into globally significant companies that benefit each corner of the UK. James also spoke about why his home town of Manchester and the North West are such important parts of that story. While the City has an extraordinary history of technological firsts, its real advantage lies in the ambition and entrepreneurial mindset that continues to drive innovation across the region today. Rather than dwell on the past (we've all been to Quarry Bank Mill enough times now! ), Manchester's foundations at the frontier of chemistry, advanced materials and automated manufacturing make it the perfect launch pad for a new generation of future industries. This is why our UK tour has been so important for us. Great founders are building startups in every corner of the country, and each region has its own strengths. If we're serious about backing Britain's AI future, we need to be listening to our regional ecosystems, building long-term partnerships, and meeting founders face-to-face, wherever they are. We’re doubling compute access for the UK’s most ambitious AI startups. Today at London Tech Week, we announced that we are doubling the compute available through the AI Research Resource for startups supported by the Sovereign AI Fund. The response since launch has been remarkable. In just three months, we have received more than 200 applications requesting over 67 million GPU hours. Those applications tell an important story about the future of British AI. Founders are building frontier AI models, scientific discovery platforms, next-generation compute infrastructure, cybersecurity technologies, drug discovery tools, and other innovations with the potential to shape the next decade of economic growth and national capability. The UK is producing a new generation of AI companies with global ambitions. But ambition alone is not enough. Startups developing strategically important AI technologies need access to the infrastructure required to train models, run large-scale experiments, and build at the frontier. If Britain wants to be an AI maker, not an AI taker, we must back our most promising startups with the strategic assets that matter. Today’s announcement does exactly that.
