It’s Cow Appreciation Day, and there's no better time to introduce July's Pets Wear Pink featured friend, Libby, whose human is Jennifer Montross, Upstate Clinical Educator! Libby is a registered Red Angus heifer with a calm, laid-back personality that has made her a favorite around the barn. She’s wonderful with kids and always happy to soak up a little extra attention. Libby truly enjoys being treated like the royalty she is. Libby isn't just charming, but she's a champion, too! Alongside her mom, Buttercup, Libby was named the Red Angus Grand Champion Cow-Calf Pair at the 2025 New York State Fair, a testament to her exceptional quality and genetics. Libby is expecting her first calf in February, and everyone is excited to see what the future holds for this special girl and her first calf. The Pets Wear Pink campaign was a collaborative effort among Upstate Cancer Center, Upstate Marketing, Upstate IMT, and the Upstate Foundation. Through the sale of pet bandanas and 2026 calendars, the campaign raised several thousand dollars to support programs and activities at Upstate Cancer Center.

Cancer Center Chaplain's Corner: It’s hard to believe that America is celebrating 250 years of independence – the semiquincentennial. Now that’s a mouthful! Thinking back, it seems like only yesterday we were celebrating our bicentennial. Remarkably, another 50 years have gone by. At times, I find myself thinking, where has all the time gone? As I ponder this, it brings me back to times, events, and experiences that I’ve had throughout my life. Some of these have been very good, and admittedly, some have been difficult. Yet all have shaped who I am, and they are truly a part of me. I remember on the day of the bicentennial, family and friends gathered and we had a picnic in the backyard. Later, we watched fireworks together. It was a wonderful day, and these are precious memories. I give thanks for these memories, even though many people who were there then are no longer here. I’m thinking that you, too, may have memories like this. In the same way, as a country, we have experienced much the same over the past 250 years. One enduring thought that I have is that throughout all of our history, we’ve grown, and by working together, we will continue to grow. We’ve come from different countries, different cultures, and had different experiences. Despite these differences, there’s been an effort to come together as one people, one country… and to make this country a better, more compassionate and more perfect union. As individuals, I believe it’s much the same. Although we’ve had unique, particular experiences, different from others yet similar in many ways, we come ever closer to one another through the sharing of ourselves, our stories and our experiences. Chaplain Kate and I serve here in the Cancer Center, and one of us is available every day of the week. It would be wonderful for us to spend time with you, share in your experiences, and learn how they’ve shaped who you are…and for us to grow together. You can ask your nurse or provider to reach out to Spiritual Care, or you can call us at (315) 464-4687. Peace and blessings - we look forward to seeing you! Chaplain Tom
