Social value isn’t a buzzword or policy idea that is ready to be binned at the next election. It’s a person whose life looks a bit different because someone, the business community, showed up. I’ve been absent from LinkedIn for a while, but have watched this space get louder and more divided in the last year, and one thing I’m really sure of is that it’s not helping the people we set out to support. Everyone’s got an opinion on what social value is, isn’t, or should be. I myself have conflicting views on the monetisation and target chasing, but what we have to be most wary of is some of the loudest voices (and emerging political parties) reducing it to a single issue - diversity targets, a tick-box exercise that doesn’t meet real community need. That’s not what I see in my work, and it’s not the whole story. I know many of you feel the same. What I actually see: a young person from the local area getting a qualification because a business chose to invest their future. A community group getting the support and skills they needed to build on their work long after we’re gone. Small local businesses understanding what responsible growth looks like even though they’ve never thought of it that way before. That’s the human story I think we’re losing. Buried under commercial pressure, competitive positioning, and a race to make numbers mean something they don’t. We’ve also got so focused on proving value that we’ve forgotten to share how it’s actually created - beyond the reporting frameworks that are seen as ‘the one source of truth’ of social return on investment. The best practice, the lessons learned, the “here’s what worked and here’s what didn’t” that used to be common place in this circle and has been lost. It shouldn’t be a competitive edge to keep quiet about. Social value isn’t one thing. It’s not just diversity, or a line in a tender response. It’s local people, local skills, local outcomes - built by responsible businesses who care enough to do it properly and talk about it honestly. We are naturally a collaborative bunch - and we need to build on each others work as other seek to break it. I’m incredibly grateful to the GGP partners I work with that have reminded me of that recently through sharing their brilliant ideas. We have status-quo challenging professionals working in our partnership and dues must go to Josh Spavins for bringing a much needed new perspective to me on what can be achieved when we get together. And not to forget Abbey Reid and Trina-Louise Higgins for providing endless inspiration to keep fighting the good fight. I remain steadfast in my determination to improve how we show up as a business community for the areas we work. Let’s not be afraid to get it wrong and learn. Consider this an invite to come together, instead of pulling apart the foundations of what enables our work. What’s the best example of social value done right that you’ve seen recently? I’d genuinely like to hear it.

POWER TO OUR PEOPLE 🎙️ An excellent start to the Good Growth Summit this morning, starting with a varied panel on skills, talent, diversity and opportunity. Teza Simukulwa, Programme Manager at Agent Academy shared: “Early Career talent are often willing, passionate, and ambitious to learn - what they often lack is opportunity. It’s important to provide and point young people in the direction of those opportunities. If we don’t have someone to pass the baton to, how will we win the race?” Whilst our very own vocL Voice Faye Skelton, Head of Policy Make UK painted a picture of the reality of the manufactoring sector; how it's jam-packed with innovation and technology that will pave the way for the future.
