Great Minds, Gen Z Energy, and India’s AI Destiny: A Conversation Worth Sharing Last night, I had an awesome chat with three brilliant Gen Z folks - Aman Parikh, a data scientist; Yug Gandhi, a medical student; and Neel Maniar, a student with big ideas, about where AI in India is headed. We got into a lively debate about whether India should go all-in on building our own Large Language Models (LLMs), focus on smaller, specialized Small Language Models (SLMs), or just tweak global AI solutions to fit our needs. It all started with a big question: Do we really need to create our own LLM from scratch, or should we take what’s already out there, customise it for India, and pour our energy into nimble SLMs that solve specific problems? Aman and Yug were fired up, full of that classic Gen Z optimism. They were like, “India’s got the brains, why should we just use someone else’s tech? Look at China, France, even the UAE they’ve got their own LLMs. Why can’t we have a BharatGPT that speaks our languages and tackles our unique challenges?” But not everyone was sold. A seasoned doctor and a stock market veteran in the room pushed back with some real talk: “Do we really want to sink billions into competing with global tech giants? Neel said something that really stuck with me: “This isn’t just about fancy tech in big cities. We need to make sure AI reaches students and startups everywhere. Let’s get campuses buzzing with opportunities for young innovators across India.” I couldn’t hold back my own thoughts either. Honestly, it’s time to call out the big players in India’s IT scene. Companies like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, who’ve been the backbone of our tech industry, seem to be dragging their feet on AI. Instead of bold moves like launching a game changing LLM or doubling down on AI innovation, we’re seeing things like Infosys’s recent buyback. That feels like playing it safe when we should be dreaming big. It’s like they’re more worried about short-term stock prices or market jitters than missing out on the biggest tech revolution since the internet. If our IT giants keep waiting for a “sure thing,” India risks becoming just a consumer of AI, not a creator. We need to be bold, invest in our talent, build solutions that matter to us, and lead the charge. FDE isn't a job title. It's a philosophy. The philosophy is simple: The customer's problem matters more than your product roadmap. Full stop. If we're truly solving the organization's most critical problem, then our most talented (and yes, expensive) engineers should be on it. Even if that means building something custom. Even if it doesn't scale immediately. The abstraction layer? The productization? That's our problem to solve, not the customer's. This philosophy does three things: 🥷 It creates radical customer empathy. When your best engineers sit with customers, they stop building features nobody asked for. 🥷 It signals priorities. Both internally and externally it says customer problems > roadmap. Always. 🥷 It builds founders. FDEs learn to balance technical excellence with business reality. They become mini-CEOs. It's why Palantir has produced the most amount of founders. The critics who call FDEs "professional services with extra steps" don't get it. Professional services implements your product. FDEs reshape your product around reality. At Paid, this isn't a hiring strategy. It's how we think about building. Every engineer. At least one FDE tour. No exceptions. Because the best products aren't built in conference rooms. They're built in the trenches with customers.
