Resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn are traditional ways to illustrating that value. But they're not the best. If you're struggling to see results with them? You need a portfolio: 1. Choose Your Platform First, choose the place where you'll host your content. I recommend a place that: Allows you to create the way you want Maximizes your visibility If you're job searching, it's tough to beat LinkedIn. Medium is another solid option. 2. Identify Your Target Companies Next, brainstorm your list of target companies. You're going to be researching them and creating value that's directly tied to their goals, challenges, and vision. I recommend starting with 3-5. Bonus points if they're in the same industry. 3. Align Your Projects Start with one company. Research the heck out of it from a high level. Then dive deeper into researching the specific product and team you're targeting. Your goal is to identify: - Goals - Challenges - Initiatives Learn as much as you can about them. 3a. Align Your Projects (Examples) Marketer? Perform site audits and recommend 3 ways for companies to get more leads. Software Engineer? QA your favorite apps / tools to identify bugs or improvements. Graphic Designer? Refresh the branding for your favorite products. 4. Map Out The Process Start with your methodology: Why this company / product? Break down your research, brainstorming, and solution process. Find and include reputable data. Project outcomes / ROI if you can. Finally, make a compelling case. Don’t just summarize, sell! 5. Show Your Work Now turn that process into content! Write up a "case study" showing: - The problem / opportunity - How you identified it - Your solution(s) - How you came up with them - The process for implementing them When it's ready, hit publish! 6. Share Your Work Now your case study is out in the world! First, add it to your LinkedIn featured section. Next, break it down into bite sized pieces of content. Start writing posts around: - Your research process - Your solutions process - Insights you came across - Etc 7. Systematize It This works best when you consistently work at it. Create a daily schedule and commit to it. Before you know it, you’ll have a body of work that includes real results and clearly illustrates your value. Here are 7 psychology principles we teach them that help turn 5x more interviews into offers: 1. Serial Position Effect What It Is: People tend to remember the first and last items in a series best. How To Leverage It: The start of your interview (small talk, intros) and the end (Q&A, closing comments) are your most memorable moments. Prepare intentional openers and closers that communicate warmth, confidence, and alignment with the role. 2. Confirmation Bias What It Is: Once someone forms an impression, they look for evidence to support it and tend to ignore conflicting information. How To Leverage It: Lead with your best story, strength, or trait as early as possible. If your interviewer thinks “This person is sharp and proactive,” they’ll interpret the rest of the interview through that lens. 3. Reciprocity What It Is: People are wired to return favors or kind gestures, big and small. How To Leverage It: Share a helpful insight about the company, compliment about the interview process, or the interviewer’s background / experience. It creates goodwill and builds rapport that you can build on throughout the interview. 4. Self-Disclosure Effect What It Is: People tend to like and trust others who share a bit of personal (but appropriate) information. How To Leverage It: Share a short, personal detail during the interview. For example, a story about why you care about this field or what inspired your career shift. It humanizes you and builds connection. 5. Mirroring What It Is: We subconsciously mirror the body language and tone of those we like, and feel closer to those who mirror us. How To Leverage It: Subtly match your interviewer’s tone, pace, and energy. This fosters connection and makes you feel like “one of us” to the interviewer, a key part of being seen as a cultural fit. 6. Liking Principle What It Is: We’re more likely to say yes to people we like. And we tend to like people who are similar to us, genuine, and warm. How To Leverage It: Don’t just aim to impress with your experience and background. Aim to connect with your interviewer. Smile. Show curiosity. Find common ground. People hire people they like and want to work with. 7. Cognitive Fluency What It Is: People prefer things that are easy to understand and remember. When something feels fluent, it feels more true and trustworthy. How To Leverage It: Use simple language and avoid jargon. Structure your answers using simple frameworks like STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result). 🧭 Our client Cole was getting interviews but couldn't close the deal. Austin Belcak shared thisI caught myself doing something last week. I had a strategy decision to make. Instead of thinking it through, I immediately opened Claude. I typed the first few lines and caught myself. I know I'm not the only one guilty of this! But the consequences of not catching it are huge. BCG just surveyed 70 C-suite execs about that exact pattern. They gave it a name: "Distributed De-Skilling." I'll translate that for you: "The way our team uses AI is making them dumber." (Excuse my French). 50% of these execs already see it happening inside their orgs. 60%+ say it'll be a larger, existential threat in the next few years. I think the timeline is shorter than that. When our automatic reaction to any problem becomes "open AI," here's what disappears first: - Problem framing - Creative thinking - New ideation Those aren't "nice to haves." Those are the exact things that make your irreplaceable at work. Here's the discipline I'm building into my own work: 1. Form Opinions First Before I touch AI, I take 5-10 minutes to brain dump about the problem. That can be inside my head or a WisprFlow dictation in a notes app. 2. Make A Call On The Path I Think Is Right Judgement is a muscle you have to use to keep effective. 3. Bring In AI Then I have AI review, share feedback, fine tune, etc. Now you might read this and think, "yea I mean that's how we did it for decades before AI, have an original thought Austin." In my opinion, that's the same as telling someone whose hooked on social media to just "have more self control." Most of us feel like we can do this in theory. In practice, the billion-dollar backed apps tend to win out. The people who invest in protecting their thinking are going to become more and more rare. And rare is valuable. Austin Belcak shared this7 Ways Failure Helped Me Achieve My Goals: In school, we’re taught that failure is something to avoid at all costs. But failure is actually required to reach your long term goals. Here are 7 ways failure helped me reach mine: 1. Failing In School This may sound strange, but failing in school actually helped my future prospects. How? If I’d gotten straight A’s and ended up with a nice job right out of school, I don’t know how motivated I would have been. Bad grades led to a rough first job, a challenge that unlocked the rest of my career. 2. Building A Music Blog In 2011, I started a music blog. It never got more than 200 total visits. I eventually shut it down. But it taught me how to set up my own website and the basics of internet marketing. That allowed me to start Cultivated Culture for less than $100 with no funding needed. 3. Building A Social App In 2014, I had an idea for an app. I spent dozens of hours mocking it up and $1,000+ on prototype. Two weeks later, two other companies launched identical apps with venture funding. But it taught me the basics of developing a piece of software, and allowed me to build our current suite of job search tools. 4. Freelancing I wanted to change industries, so I freelanced to gain experience. I didn’t get any clients from the first 1,000+ emails I sent. But it taught me that “sales” and outreach are volume games, as well as giving me data that I eventually used to optimize, get clients, and leverage in resume, LinkedIn, and interview conversations. 5. Networking I took me months to begin networking in my job search. I was terrified. When I did, I used all the generic “pick your brain” asks. When those didn’t work, and my apps didn’t either, I was forced to try again with a totally new approach. That, combined with those cold email skills, let to referrals at Google, Microsoft, & Twitter 6. LinkedIn (Take 1) I shared my first piece of LinkedIn content in 2016. I did it for about two weeks before feeling dejected that I wasn’t getting any reactions or views. That eventually led to the realization that, if I wanted to grow, I needed to focus on creating content instead of outcomes at the beginning. But... 7. LinkedIn (Take 2) About six months later, I starting sharing LinkedIn content again. This time, I kept it up for a month before running out of ideas. I had to stop again. But it eventually taught me that creating content is about building a repeatable system vs. just writing when inspiration strikes. That’s when everything clicked.

Search LinkedIn for job-related terms. 2. Filter for "Posts" 3. Go to All Filters > Author Company and add your targets. Now you have a list of content creators at your dream companies! - 3. Find Career Changers 1. Search for your target job 2. Filter for "People" 3. Add 10 targets to the "Companies" filter 4. Add 10 companies in your current industry to "Past Companies" Now you have a list of everyone who went from your current industry to your target industry! - 4. See Who's Hiring Many hiring managers post about open roles. Here's how to find them: 1. Search for: Target Job Title + Hiring 2. Filter for "Posts" 3. Go to All Filters > Author Company 4. Add your target companies Apply for the role and DM the person who posted it! - 5. Cultural Research Ex-employees can give you the scoop on culture. How to find them: 1. Run a blank search 2. Add your target company to the "Past Company" filter That'll show you every person who used to work at your target company. Find ones who left for a better opp! - 6. Find Salaries In Transparent States Most companies won't post a salary range. But some states have passed a law that require them to including: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Nevada, Rhode Island, & Washington So search for your target job in those states. But great negotiation requires research. And salary research, well...it kinda sucks. There are so many websites, they have broad ranges, and that makes the whole process exhausting and confusing. Until now. I'm going to show you how to use ChatGPT Agent to automate the entire process of salary research. Step #1: Fire Up ChatGPT Agent Head to ChatGPT and start a new chat. Click the little "+" sign and select Agent Mode. Step #2: Use This Copy & Paste Prompt Here's the prompt I used in the video. You just need a link to the job you're targeting, then just fill in the blanks: I landed a phone screen for an [Job Title] role at [Company] in [Location] (Job Description: [Link]). I want your help performing market research on salaries and helping me identify a range to target. Here are the instructions: 1. Perform research on compensation ranges and structures for [Job Title] at [Company] 2. Identify [Company]'s top 5 competitors, then perform research on compensation ranges and structures for [Job Title] roles at those companies. Compare those to [Company]. 3. Perform compensation research for [Job Title] roles at other similar companies in the [Location] market. When you're done, please output the following: 1. A summary of all the compensation data you found for [Company], their competitors, and [Location]-based roles. 2. Use that data to recommend a salary range I can leverage in my upcoming phone screen that's realistic in the eyes of the recruiter while allowing me to tap into the mid-to-upper ranges for this role. 3. Please give me a script / templates I can use to handle the salary conversation in this phone screen, specifically the question of "What are your salary expectations?" I like Austin Belcak's advice so we can based some of it off of that. Step #3: Go For A Walk (Or Take A Nap) Once you send the prompt, ChatGPT Agent is going to get to work for you. It'll work in the background so you can do, well, literally anything else with your time. If you have the ChatGPT app, it'll even ping you when it's done! Step #4: Review, Validate, & Rehearse! When it's done, you'll have a full breakdown of the salary data for this role, the range ChatGPT recommends you target, and scripts to do the negotiation. All you need to do is check the AI's sourcing to make sure the data is accurate. Once you feel good? She Invested In Clarity As A First Step She got super clear on what her dream company and roles looked like *before* doing anything else. She prioritized the high level themes (compensation, flexibility, etc.) Then she defined criteria for each and turned it into a scorecard. That way she could be laser focused. 2. She Used The 90/10 Rule In Her Approach She knew that remote roles are flooded with applications. So she only spent 10% of her time on apps and 90% of her time on networking. She used tools like ResyMatch and ResyBullet to quickly optimize her resume in ~10 minutes per role before applying. Then she reallocated the time she saved to build strong relationships. 3. She Built Relationships With Decision Makers In Her Field Her networking was focused on a smaller set of high quality decision makers. She targeted people who could either: • Influence the hiring decision for her target roles • Refer her into her target companies and give her a goldmine of info She researched them to identify goals, interests, and angles she could use to add value. Then she led with that. 4. She Proved Why She Was The Most Valuable Candidate She didn’t say, “I’m another RD like everyone else on your team.” She said, “I’m an RD *and* I can help you crush your social media game to get more clients.” Great candidates don’t stop at “I’m like everyone else on your team.” They go above and beyond to differentiate themselves and their value. You need to be treating it like a full time employee. Imagine delegating the most exhausting parts of the search: - Finding companies with open roles - Tailoring your resume for each job - Researching companies before interviews That's exactly what Claude's new Cowork feature enables. It lets you build your own job search "employee" that actually does work for you. Like an intern who works 24/7 and never complains. Here's the exact process we're using to help our clients set it up in 15 minutes: 1. Download The App Go to Claude.com/Download and install the desktop app. That's where Cowork lives. 2. Create A "Cowork" Folder Add a dedicated folder to your Desktop or Documents. Cowork works out of this folder. This is critical because it limits Cowork to that folder so it can't access the rest of your machine. 3. Hiring feels slower. AI has changed the work. Companies are more careful. Candidates are tired. But companies are still hiring every day. New roles open every day. People get hired every day. The opportunity did not disappear. It just stopped coming automatically. That is the part a lot of people do not want to hear. There is no single tactic that fixes this. Networking helps some people. A sharper resume helps others. Better targeting helps others. AI helps if you use it with judgment. A referral helps if the person receiving it trusts the signal. Hiring is still human. Someone on the other side is trying to answer: Can this person do the work? Will they figure things out? Will they raise the quality bar? Will they need to be dragged forward? Will they make the team better? That means your job is not just to apply. Your job is to create signal. Your resume is a signal. Your LinkedIn is a signal. Your outreach is a signal. Your portfolio is a signal. Your curiosity is a signal. The way you use AI is a signal. The market is more competitive. But competitive markets reward people who take more agency, not less. For a long time, I thought success meant convincing people to believe in me. → So I explained my ideas. → Defended my decisions. → Worked harder to earn approval. Looking back, none of that changed anything. The only thing that changed people's minds was the outcome. That's when I realised something. Not everyone is hoping you'll succeed. Some people need you to stay exactly where you are. Because your growth forces them to question the limits they've accepted for themselves. The moment I stopped chasing approval and started chasing progress, everything became simpler. I no longer needed everyone to understand the journey. I just needed to keep taking the next step. If you're building something meaningful, these are the reminders worth carrying with you: 1️⃣ Stop asking for permission. ↳ Your future shouldn't depend on someone else's confidence. 2️⃣ Expect resistance. ↳ Every meaningful change makes someone uncomfortable, especially those who've stopped growing. 3️⃣ Protect your energy. ↳ The more time you spend proving yourself, the less time you spend becoming the person you want to be. 4️⃣ Let your work do the talking. ↳ Explanations are temporary. Results have a much longer shelf life. 5️⃣ Choose purpose over popularity. ↳ Being respected is far more valuable than being liked by everyone. 6️⃣ Stay humble, but keep raising your standards. ↳ Quiet confidence compounds over time. 7️⃣ Build around people who celebrate your success. ↳ The right environment doesn't just support ambition—it multiplies it. 8️⃣ Keep moving forward. ↳ Every small step is another vote for the future you're creating.
