Akash Keshav shared thisReducing the carbon footprint in hard-to-abate sectors like aluminum is often seen as not being commercially viable. The common belief is that it requires heavy investment with limited business returns. However, the numbers coming from Arconic tell a very different story. We have been part of Arconic’s sustainability journey for almost two years now, and I have observed the organization very closely. Their honest and rigorous focus on capturing accurate, granular data and processing it in the most auditable way possible is something I truly admire. They do not look at data only from a reporting perspective, but also through the lens of business efficiency and business outcomes. As a software solution partner for sustainability data management, I feel very proud to be a small part of this journey. I am also deeply grateful to the Arconic team for entrusting us and constantly challenging us to build something that did not exist before. Akash Keshav shared thisAlnylam Pharmaceuticals published its latest sustainability report a couple of weeks ago, and I recently went through it. Having worked with organizations across the world, I have increasingly come to believe that there are two very different approaches to sustainability. Some organizations act because they have to. Regulations demand it, customers ask for data, or investors expect it. Others go beyond compliance and embed sustainability into how they make decisions, run operations, and think about long-term business value. Having been part of Alnylam's sustainability journey for almost two years, I believe they belong firmly in the second category. For me, it's not just their ambition, but how they work, the attention to detail, the culture, the respect for partners and vendors, and a genuine willingness to collaborate to create meaningful change. It has been a privilege for all of us at Sprih to be part of this journey. A big thank you to Arun Skaria, Jeffrey, and Nayan for their trust and for giving us this opportunity. I strongly recommend sustainability professionals take a look at Alnylam's latest sustainability report (find the link to report in the comments). Akash Keshav shared thisEvery year, the Sprih team takes a day away from work to visit 14 Trees Foundation. For us, this has now become a ritual, a way of returning to the place where Sprih’s story began, where I first met Rohit, Hemant, and Ravi, and where many of the relationships and values behind Sprih took shape. 14Trees is a truly unique ecological restoration initiative. Its work goes far beyond plantation. The focus is on restoring the entire local ecosystem by planting native species, conserving water, avoiding fast-growing exotic trees, creating livelihoods for local tribal communities, and using technology to bring transparency to every stage of the journey. Every visit reminds us that meaningful impact requires patience, consistency, and care. We spend the day away from screens, working with our hands, planting trees, walking through the site, and searching for the trees we planted in previous years. There is a special kind of happiness in seeing a small sapling grow taller and stronger each year. It makes the impact feel personal and real. We do not plant trees only in our own names. For every event Sprih hosts across the world, we plant a tree in the name of each participant. It is our way of ensuring that every gathering leaves behind something meaningful and lasting. Our annual visit to 14 Trees Foundation helps us reconnect with ourselves, with nature, and with the larger purpose behind the work we do. It is tiring, refreshing, grounding, and deeply fulfilling, and we look forward to it every year. You can see all the trees we have planted so far in the comment below. Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting our webinar on "How Leading Premium Consumer Brands Are Tackling Supplier Data and Sustainability Reporting in 2026." It was so energizing to see professionals from across geographies join us, from sustainability leaders and procurement teams to compliance and supply chain experts, all united by a common goal: building more transparent, resilient, and sustainable supply chains. A huge thank you to my fellow speakers, Jay and Maithili, for bringing such thoughtful perspectives and real-world experiences to the discussion. The richness of the conversation came from the diversity of ideas and the willingness to share what is truly working on the ground. Sustainability data has evolved into a strategic business asset. As businesses move beyond fragmented approaches toward scalable digital platforms, they are better equipped to streamline supplier engagement, improve data quality, and generate actionable insights. Achieving meaningful progress, however, requires close collaboration across procurement, sustainability, compliance teams, and suppliers themselves, ensuring that sustainability objectives are embedded throughout the value chain. With regulatory expectations continuing to expand and become more complex, organizations that invest today in robust, accurate, and transparent sustainability infrastructure will be significantly better positioned to meet future requirements while maintaining a competitive advantage. This session was made especially rewarding by the engagement from all the attendees. So when we set out to assess 100 of the world's leading premium brands, but we weren't looking for who had the best sustainability report. We were looking for who had built the systems behind it. The findings are sharper than I expected. Most organisations can measure their emissions. Very few can prove they govern the number behind the number — their suppliers, their upstream footprint, their value chain. That gap is structural. And it is widening. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 is one of the most rigorous studies we have undertaken so far. Our analysis shows that luxury and premium brands — especially across fashion, beauty, jewellery, and lifestyle — are undergoing a structural shift. The definition of luxury is no longer centered only around scarcity, craftsmanship, or heritage. It is increasingly being shaped by sustainability, transparency, and long-term responsibility. Brands like adidas, Patagonia, Kering, Moncler, FERRAGAMO, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., PUMA Group, Golden Goose, Shiseido, SWAROVSKI, and others are emerging as flag bearers, driving meaningful change through supply chain transparency, material innovation, circularity, and long-term sustainability commitments. One thing became very clear through this study: sustainability is no longer just a compliance exercise or cost center. It is becoming a long-term strategic advantage, and leading brands are adopting it aggressively. Some insights in this paper may feel uncomfortable for parts of the industry. Others will quietly validate the direction a few brands have already started moving toward. The brands shaping the future are not necessarily the loudest. They are the ones doing the hardest internal work — often years before speaking about it publicly. If you are a CXO at a premium or luxury brand, a board member, investor, sustainability leader, or someone thinking deeply about the future of aspirational business — this paper was written for you. Akash Keshav liked thisAkash Keshav liked thisDid you know the corporate tax code actually subsidizes burning sportswear? ⚽🔥 With the World Cup behind us, while we may all reminisce about the games and the teams that won and ones that didn’t, I wonder about how many World Cup jerseys are being burned as we speak. When I headed demand planning and inventory mgmt for Nike’s APLA (Asia Pac/LatAm) geography during the World Cup in Brasil, I watched a single 90-minute match (the legendary 7-1 Brasil vs. Germany game) instantly vaporize millions of dollars in fan gear. In sports merchandising, when a star team drops out early, demand collapses overnight. But the standard supply chain playbook makes this problem far worse: ❌ We order millions of finished jerseys from Asia 18 months in advance to chase cheap unit prices. ❌ When forecasts fail, we pay astronomical emergency air freight surcharges to patch inventory gaps. ❌ When deadstock inevitably piles up, brands use "Waste-to-Energy" incineration to get a legally required "Certificate of Destruction" to unlock a corporate tax write-off. Under current tax laws, spending $1.00 to destroy inventory to get $0.21 back in tax relief is treated as standard practice. We are literally using tax subsidies to cushion bad inventory planning and environmental destruction. Yet no one talks about the level of toxins that get generated by this seemingly standard practice, not to mention burning these synthetic jerseys is no different than burning piles and piles of plastic water bottles – would you want to breathe that? Its July 21 workshop revisited the same three concepts it floated back in March: report all 15 Scope 3 categories at once, phase in by sector, or phase in by category. Each one changes which of your suppliers and business units need to be reporting-ready first, and by how much. We also broke down the assurance standards CARB is leaning toward for Scope 1 and 2, including one that's already being adopted across the EU, UK, Australia, and Japan. It's worth knowing if you're already reporting under CSRD. None of this is final. But the shape of what's coming is clear enough to start mapping now instead of waiting for the rule. I just read a phenomenal article by my co-founder and Director of Business Development at SmartTerm Limited, Jayme Hoyte, titled The Economic Case for EdTech in Emerging Markets. She makes a powerful point. Many emerging economies still treat education as an undervalued driver of progress, even though it directly shapes productivity, innovation, and economic mobility. In the Caribbean, we spend more than $20B a year on education, yet less than 5% of students leave secondary school with the basic five subjects including English and Mathematics. That means more than 95% of our students are not being adequately served by our education systems. That is not just a gap. It is a full-blown crisis. And the real danger is that it doesn’t always feel like one. This is where EdTech comes in as a serious investment in human capital. It is not an add-on. While the world pours trillions into developing "artificial" intelligence, "human" intelligence is falling behind. The future will demand more from people, not less. Digital platforms widen access. AI-powered adaptive tools personalize learning. Data improves decision making. Automation frees teachers to teach and administrators to focus on outcomes. These are the foundation for stronger economies and societies. Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley recently warned that if we fail to unite and invest in education, we risk a new form of colonisation. One where we remain consumers of technology rather than creators. That warning captures the very reason why, nine years ago, six of us from Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados came together to start SmartTerm. SmartTerm is not just about better technology for schools and governments. It is about sovereignty, innovation, competitiveness, and the future we choose for ourselves. Here’s the big idea. It was an honour to be selected to pitch ARVO at the Investor Connect program during the Renewable Energy India Expo 2025, in the Investor Zone powered by SanchiConnect and Informa Markets. It was energising to present alongside outstanding innovators to a curated group of investors and enterprise leaders driving India’s clean energy transition. In my pitch, I focused on how Digital Product Passports (DPPs) will fundamentally reshape the battery and EV value chain: * Under the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, EV, LMT, and industrial batteries placed on the EU market will require a digital battery passport by 2027, accessible via a QR code and containing data on carbon footprint, performance, durability, and recycled content. * In parallel, India’s Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, and the national EPR portal are pushing manufacturers towards full lifecycle traceability, responsible recovery, and recycling of all battery types. ARVO sits at this intersection of compliance, transparency, and competitiveness, using Vision AI, IoT, and blockchain to create tamper-proof digital passports for every product and battery, from cell to pack to vehicle, across global supply chains.
