“Alan recruited me to lead the development of a dormant and underdeveloped senior living markets segment in what the called the “white zone.” The deep meaning of that zone meant that I was free to take a white board and create a vision of what our expansion could look like. Most leaders would have called it a grey area of unknowns, but through his most important characteristic of positivity, Alan framed it as a world of expansion with unlimited possibilities, with the only limitations being your own. I thrived under his trust, respect and support during a difficult assignment; it was difficult for me, personally, as I had not held an individual contributor role for several years, and had no experience in healthcare outsourcing. Leaders who check their ego at the door, give their people latitude to make well-intentioned mistakes and have bottomless patience are rare. I was privileged to have him as my “boss” who is somewhat of an oxymoron given his gifts of people management. He made the two and a half years fun, exciting and productive and was instrumental in helping me move to a new role with in the company.
