Brett Gelfand posted thisOne month before we were supposed to launch our cannabis op in Colorado, regulators ordered us to destroy our entire crop over a minor compliance infraction. We had spent years building a nearly $20 million vertically integrated cannabis company, including a 50,000 sqft indoor facility. Launch was only weeks away. Then the MED walked in. Because of a relatively minor compliance issue, we were ordered to destroy hundreds of plants. Watching months of work get chopped down in a single day is something I’ll never forget. At the time, I was frustrated to say the least. Today, I actually find it a little ironic. Back then, like most operators, I wanted regulators as far away from my business as possible. Now, I regularly hear companies ask why regulators don’t step in to solve unpaid invoices, force customers to pay, or protect them from bad debt. The truth is, regulators were never designed to be your collections department. They can’t fix a credit decision after the sale has already been made. That experience taught me something I still believe today: The best way to protect your business isn’t hoping someone steps in after things go wrong. It’s making better credit decisions before extending terms in the first place. After everything it takes to build a business, grow the product, and get it to market… Make sure you actually get paid.

It wasn’t even growth. And as cliche as it, it is the people. The team that shows up every day, cares about the mission, and pushes each other to get better. The clients and members who trust us, challenge us, and make us want to keep building solutions that move the cannabis industry forward. I’ve learned that building a great company isn’t just about hiring talented people, it’s about finding people you genuinely enjoy working with. When you surround yourself with the right team and the right customers, work stops feeling like work. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who’s been part of this journey. We’ve still got a long way to go, but I’m excited about what we’re building together and the impact we can continue to make for this industry.

Worrying about cultivation, compliance, taxes, payroll, licensing, equipment breaking, hiring the right people, and somehow finding enough cash to keep everything moving. Growing quality cannabis is hard. What's even harder is doing everything right, producing a product you're proud of, selling it... and then watching the invoices sit unpaid while due dates keep getting pushed back. I've been on that side of the table. That's why I believe protecting your receivables is just as important as growing great flower. After everything it takes to get cannabis to market, make sure you actually get paid for it.

It has been an invigorating and arduous ride full of bumps and challenges, and it's been the most incredibly rewarding professional experience I could've devoted my 40's to. We've helped 51 cannabis clients build out their senior exec leadership teams across functions and geographies thus far, and have made thousands of friends along the way. We've expanded in recent years to other health & wellness industry categories, but cannabis built this house. Cheers to my industry friends who've been through it all too, and to biohacking our way through a lot more wild times with it because none of us wanna look as as weathered as this guy anytime soon.

As we're getting ready to head home, I found myself looking back at these photos. They capture so much more than a vacation. They capture moments I'll never forget. This was my first trip to Brazil. We watched my nieces and nephews perform at Festa Junina. Played barefoot soccer with the kids. Shared long family dinners. Enjoyed slow mornings with fresh pão de queijo and coffee. And met some of the kindest people we've ever encountered. Even while we've been away, business has continued to move forward. Our team has kept serving clients, solving problems, and executing every day. I'm incredibly grateful for the team we've built. Their commitment gave me the freedom to be fully present with my family while knowing the business was in good hands. I'm heading home with a deeper appreciation for my family, a greater respect for Brazilian culture, and a lot of gratitude for the memories we've made. Building a successful business matters. A new Inventory Availability Agent - now, salespeople can ping our email and get same-day responses on what's available, testing potencies, and what's remaining. ***** What's Coming in Q3 Next quarter we’re launching an entirely re-designed front-end. Same behavior, but a major glow up. The latest framework. Consistent components. Enterprise-grade search (we heard you!) Keyboard shortcuts embedded throughout. We’re also launching a Grow Plan, major upgrades to our label system, and entirely upgraded reporting. Demand planning, more advanced production planning, promo tracking - all of this will become possible with our new reporting. We strongly believe that AI should improve people's lives, not worsen it. We can't control what's happening on a macro scale, but we can use the platform we have to make positive change in our own sphere. Onward and upward.
