"Pick your favorite." That's the actual response an enterprise service organization received from their SPM vendor when they described the volume of install-base lines they needed to forecast. Not "here's how we'll handle it." Pick your favorite. Here's the math: Take a typical complex service organization: - 200,000 part numbers - 800 depot locations - Multiple time horizons - Multiple condition codes (new, refurbished, repairable) The combinatorial matrix is enormous. And SPM systems process it in batch windows - typically overnight runs that need to complete before the planning team arrives in the morning. Something has to give. So you subset. You plan the A-items. You plan the critical safety stock items. You plan the high-value items. The remaining 60-70% of your catalog? Managed by rules of thumb, min/max policies set three years ago, or not managed at all. This is the scale ceiling. It's not a bug - it's physics. Batch-processing architectures have finite capacity, and the service parts matrix exceeds it. The parts that fall outside the planning boundary are exactly the ones that create surprises. The tail SKU that stocks out and causes a $50K expedited shipment. The low-volume part that suddenly spikes because of a quality issue nobody connected to demand planning. The question isn't "how do we plan better within the subset?" It's "how do we eliminate the need to subset at all?"
