And interestingly, this gearbox still spun freely despite the damage. The planet bearings themselves are pristine, so this is 100% gear failure. Any guesses what may have caused this? And how were the 2nd stage planets still able to spin freely? A number of #gearboxes and #mainshafts getting the final touches before heading out to get a #windturbine back up and running! So what does #Multibrand mean? It is a buzzword often used in the #windenergy industry. This year alone we have worked on 23 different gearbox models and 13 different mainshafts across 14 different wind turbine technologies. Any guess which 4 these are from? When we say “rating element,” we mean from a design standard calculation perspective, it is likely to the be first component to fail. Any guess which color component this is? Notice the zip ties around the rollers?Any idea why those are needed for this particular planet bearing? Bruce Neumiller liked thisBruce Neumiller liked thisWild thing I learned while writing yesterday. Back in 1982, an oil company planted a wind turbine in Wyoming. But after the bearings gave out five years later, they blew it up. They blasted it apart with two rounds of dynamite. The debris scattered across a quarter-mile radius. They figured the national “experiment” in alternative energy sources was over, so it wasn’t worth the fix. Today, those same high plains are the heart of Wyoming’s wind industry, and turbines are a fixture of the skyline. They overlooked one thing, I guess. What’s that old saying in Wyoming? “It’s not always this windy. Sometimes it blows like hell.”

After a near two-year search across Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico and Tennessee, Realta Fusion has picked the home for its next headquarters and R&D facility. "We found it in our own backyard," said CEO and Co-Founder Kieran Furlong. The Madison, Wisconsin facility, on the former Oscar Mayer plant site, will be called "The Realta Forge." The target is 600+ jobs and groundbreaking before year-end. Wisconsin Act 165, the first standalone US state law exempting fusion project capex from state sales tax underpins the prize: → $37.5m in state sales and use tax exemptions → Up to $15m in performance-based EZ tax credits (WEDC) → $2.8m in TIF from Madison, its first to a private company for job creation in a decade

For electric professionals: AEP Ohio was submitting paperwork at the PUCO stating their secondary-service customer demand (small businesses) was increasing 32% from 2024 to 2026. They were forecasting primary service demand (medium-sized businesses) to go up 21% in the same two-year period. Hyperscale data centers do not take either type of service. Energy professionals would know this is an obviously wrong forecast on its face. It is a nightmare for getting electric rates right. So why the increase? AEP Ohio was stuffing data center load forecasts into other rate classes. This is not gold-standard work - well, not our gold standard - it is an eye-opening failure to apply really basic principles in regulation. It is not a signal to look away, it is a signal to dig deeper into load forecasts and a call for reform. (See OMAEG comments in Case No. 26-0047)
