Plot problems get all the blame. 👀 But many story issues are POV problems in disguise. Most writers pick a point of view because it feels right. “I write in first person.” “Third person is popular right now.” But POV isn’t a vibe. It’s a decision that shapes how readers experience every beat of your story. The real flex is using it with intention. Don’t get me wrong. POV won’t fix a messy story, but getting it right makes everything else easier to see. • Single POV works best when you want readers close, fully immersed in one emotional lens. • Dual POV shines when both characters carry equal emotional weight and their perspectives drive tension and payoff. • Multi or Omniscient POV builds scope and complexity when each viewpoint reveals something the others can’t. Neither is wrong. The question is always alignment: Which perspective delivers the emotional truth of this moment? Think of POV as lighting. Change the light, and the same scene hits differently. Change the lens, and the same plot lands deeper—or not at all. POV guides readers through what to feel, when to lean in, and why they stay. So next time you sit down to draft, don’t ask: “Whose head do I like writing from?” Ask: “Whose eyes make this moment matter most?” POV doesn’t just tell the story. It decides whether this story works.

I'm seeing a new mindset issue starting to affect writers. While researching The Writer's Mind, I'm talking to hundreds of writers about what stops them from writing. I'm finding a new mindset issue that I didn't expect. **Fear of AI judgment.** Not fear of AI itself. Fear that other people will judge them for using AI in their creative process, no matter the extent. And related, I keep seeing claims like this: “If you use AI and then lie about it, that means you’re ashamed of using it.” Which I don’t think is necessarily true. People usually lie because they’re afraid of consequences, not because they're ashamed. So do people lie about AI use because they're ashamed or because they're afraid they'll be rejected by a community that hasn’t yet agreed on what’s acceptable with AI? Here's something about freelance writing that nobody really talks about… The fact that you can fire clients. No meetings or discussions about concerns. Just a polite "this isn't working out," and you're done. I've had clients sending me edits at 11 pm on a Friday, asking for them back by the morning. I've had others return months after a project's conclusion and ask for extras. For free! And then there are those who gladly accept my work, only to drag their heels when it comes to paying. Newbie Zia would've just dealt with it. Sucked it up. Complained to friends but kept accepting it. Experienced Zia sends a boundary-setting email. If it's ignored, I finish the contract and ghost professionally. No chance after chance for people who think my time is negotiable. And the wild part is that nothing bad happens. The business doesn't collapse. The income doesn't dry up. I just have more space for clients who actually respect that I exist outside their emergencies. That's the freedom nobody mentions when they're selling you the freelance dream. It's not just about working wherever the hell you like (though that's brilliant). It's about choosing who gets access to your time, energy, and skills. Employment traps you with the same nightmare colleagues year after year. With freelancing, you can curate your client list. Life's too short to spend it with people who think your boundaries are suggestions!

Most writers think editing is about fixing sentences. It isn’t. Editing is about thinking clearly. When a writer struggles, it’s rarely because of grammar. It’s because they don’t know: **What the scene is doing **What the character wants **Why the chapter exists **What the reader should feel at this moment... So they keep rewriting sentences instead of fixing decisions. But what editing teaches you is how to ask better questions: **Whose story is this, really? **What changes in this scene? **What information am I withholding, and why? **Is this emotion earned, or just stated? Once writers understand editing: 1. They stop polishing confusion. 2. They stop decorating weak scenes. 3. They start writing with intent. 4. This is why writers who understand editing: Draft faster, revise less, take feedback better, and grow with every book they write. Editing isn’t the enemy of creativity. It’s the discipline that makes creativity legible. And every writer deserves that clarity. We've got a medical misinformation problem. It's showing up in brand content, wellness, blogs, and health organizations that should know better. As a nurse practitioner, I've seen firsthand the harm medical misinformation can cause for a patient. As a health writer, I know the difference credentials can make. Nurses are consistently the most trustworthy profession, and nurse writers bring that trust to your health content. For freelancers, November and December can feel like a dead zone.  Budgets are tapped, editorial calendars are locked, and assignments slow to a crawl. But the slow season is actually one of the most strategic windows you get all year. This is the time to build independent revenue streams and create content that keeps working for you long after the holidays. Draft those evergreen Substack posts, shape that book proposal, or finally outline the chapters you’ll need for that pitch. Put together a pipeline of social videos or podcast episodes you can roll out when you’re buried in deadlines later. Future-you will thank you. It’s also a perfect moment to develop thoughtful, evergreen pitches tied to predictable news events in the months ahead. Some of these ideas may turn into paid work; others simply strengthen your portfolio and position you for bigger opportunities. It may feel like nothing is happening but this is the season where you quietly build the things you won’t have time for once the work comes rushing back. And when people ask me how I’ve had time to build everything else; my newsletter, events business, steady LinkedIn content, a public-speaking course, and even a couple of ghostwritten books, December is your answer.
