David Paquette reposted thisDavid Paquette reposted thisA few weeks ago I posted about bringing a retro arcade game to HPE Discover. The goal was simple, make data protection and ransomware recovery something people could actually feel, not just hear about in a session. It worked. The Ransomware Arcade drove real conversations. Not "interesting demo" conversations, the kind where customers start mapping what they just experienced to their own environments. That's the moment every PMM is building toward. The HPE Cyber Resilience Vault demo landed just as well. Sales and engineering teams were energized by the customer response, and the prospect conversations coming out of those demos had a different quality to them. When people see recovery in action rather than on a slide, the questions get sharper and more specific. HPE Discover confirmed something I've believed for a while, experiential marketing in this space isn't a nice-to-have. It's how you break through in a category where every vendor is saying roughly the same thing. Good week. Great conversations. And yes, Allegiant Stadium with Imagine Dragons and Steve Aoki wasn't a bad way to close it out either. Already thinking about what we build next for Discover Barcelona. I’d been at Angie’s List for the better part of six years. When I gave my notice, Bill Oesterle, a leader who has shaped my approach to work, sat me down to try to keep me. He didn’t talk about comp or title. He said something I’ve carried ever since: “Mandy, you’re one of those people I’d pay just to hang around. You’re good for this place, and you’re good for the people in it.” Bill died in 2023, after a long fight with ALS. I still think about what he said. Not just because it flattered me, because it named something I didn’t have words for. That there’s a kind of contribution that doesn’t show up in a metric. The effect you have on the people around you. Whether the room is better because you’re in it. Most leaders never learn to say that out loud. Bill did. Indianapolis is full of people who passed through that company and still carry a piece of how he led. If you’re a leader: tell people the thing you think but never say.
