Breaking news has emerged: OpenAI is partnering with SoftBank's portfolio company Arm on a new dedicated #AI #AIChip, with Broadcom further distancing itself from both NVIDIA and AMD, following the announcement of massive deals over the past few weeks. Thanks to Jill Malandrino for having me back on Nasdaq TradeTalks, alongside Grant Geyer, to talk about one of the most important intersections in our industry, where electronics hardware meets cybersecurity. Cybersecurity doesn’t start with software. It starts with trusted hardware and secure supply chains. A few reflections from our conversation: 🔹 Electronics are everywhere, from AI and aerospace to agriculture and automotive, and if the hardware behind them is at risk, nothing is truly safe.  🔹 Every device, from your laptop to your doorbell, is made up of hundreds of components. Trust in each one matters. Lose it at any point in the supply chain, and everything downstream is compromised.  🔹 Standards are what create that trust. They provide us with a common language, visibility, and accountability, enabling global collaboration.  🔹 That’s why the Global Electronics Association continues to lead with industry-driven standards like IPC-1792, helping companies secure their manufacturing processes from the ground up. A combination of panicky ill-informed lemmings and predatory giant HFT pools that encourage and parisitically profit from volatility does not bode well for long term innovation in the West. Thought experiment: 90% tax for any trade made inside a trading day and 5% tax for any trade made across 2 years, on a sliding scale of pain for rumor-driven panic and vampiric volatility profiteering. Could be useful…

NVIDIA invested $4B into Lumentum and Coherent Corp. This isn’t a supply chain hedge. It's a signal. AI workloads are bandwidth- and latency-bound. Moving data between GPUs is a real constraint. The industry is converging to solve the optical I/O problem. Expect to see more announcements over coming months on laser technology, optical interconnects, LPO, CPO and more. But solving optical I/O is only half the equation. If we convert photons back to electrons at the switching layer, we give up much of the power, performance and latency advantages optics provides in the first place. What’s next is clear: integrated, high-performance, volume-manufacturable All-Optical Switches. An integrated switch technology that meets customers' volume and cost targets whilst providing all the performance benefits of optics. Another key trend to watch in 2026 is the downstream server rack production ramp. According to NVIDIA's CEO comments two months ago, downstream appears to be a bigger bottleneck than upstream. Our “chip vs. rack” chart, which compares TSMC’s chip output with Blackwell server rack shipments, highlights quarterly fluctuations in TSMC’s production plan. As of November, monthly server rack output reached 5.5k units based on our Asia Tech Hardware analyst’s update (see Exhibit 8). If monthly output rises to 7k–8k in 2026, the annual run rate should reach 80k–90k NVL72 racks – enough to consume most of TSMC’s Blackwell chips.

We expect the 800VDC architecture to be adopted in Rubin Ultra Kyber racks in 2027. Also, in our view, this will lead to significant content value growth for the power-supply industry, driven by (1) expansion into total solution offerings from single PSU modules; (2) high-power components and increasing customization; and (3) bargaining power with limited supply and higher barriers. Expansion into total solution offerings: Instead of supplying PSUs within the compute rack, power-supply vendors offer total solutions, including power racks/SSTs/rectifiers, PDUs, and integrated cooling systems (Exhibit 6). High-power components and increasing customization: The high-power density requires the replacement of traditional silicon-based components with advanced SiC/GaN power semis and high-power components. Besides, as power conversion moves towards the facility level, we expect to see more customized requirements from customers (especially CSPs) to better align with data center layouts and back-up needs. We believe this could bring ASP/margin upside. Bargaining power with limited supply and higher barriers: The SiC/GaN power semis industry is highly concentrated with complex production process and limited supply. Power-supply leaders could enjoy greater bargaining power, supported by higher tech barriers and long-built supply-chain relationship.
