Spent Friday at the UCLA Anderson Pulse Conference and was struck by how quickly the center of gravity is shifting in entertainment. I met Collins Key, who started posting YT videos as a teenager and now runs a 65-person media company delivering 750M views a month. Creators aren’t trying to break into Hollywood anymore. They’re building fully-fledged media companies on their own terms, with their own audiences and IP. There’s a similar shift happening in gaming. Some of the top Roblox experiences that can attract 10M+ concurrent players are built by teams of just 3-5 creators, often in their early 20s. Studios aren’t hiring these creators, they’re licensing their IP. The pipeline has flipped. Albert Cheng, Head of Amazon MGM’s AI Studio, talked about the role AI will play in what comes next (and frankly how AI will accelerate this shift). His team just produced a high-quality animated short in six weeks with just seven people, a fraction of the time and cost of traditional production. His view was that AI doesn’t replace creatives, it amplifies them. It removes cost barriers, enables more experimentation, and puts the power to create into more hands. My big takeaway from Albert’s session and the day as a whole was that we’re entering an era where small teams with the right ideas, audience, and tools can operate at the scale of traditional studios. We are already seeing it with YouTube but the next big franchise may come from a Discord server or a Roblox world. The studios that understand this and embrace it will win. Big thanks to Jay Tucker and team for organizing the event.

Very excited to share the news of Starface World partnering with Astō Consumer Partners. Not everyone knows this, but Brian Bordainick and Julie Schott were the very first founders we backed when we went independent with BBG Ventures in 2019, after spinning out of AOL. We warehoused the deal at their pre-seed then dove in to lead their seed. From the moment they walked in with their bright yellow deck and smiley face (IYKYK) we knew they had something special. They are the quintessential example of our Deep Humanity thesis - what emotional/social/physical needs still need to be met, despite the automation of AI, or even in spite of AI. So rarely does a brand come along that turns a moment of shame into a moment of joy. Julie, Brian and the team have been doing that since Day 1 - I still get a kick out of seeing Gen Alpha and Gen Z rocking their stars proudly on their face from my street corner to sitting across from me on the plane. Bravo on finding a partner that allows you to continue on with the world-building you have been so pitch perfect on to date. Welcome to the team Moira, Clayton, and Brian!
