Most law firms (and most agencies running their ads) have no idea which search terms are actually driving their best leads and cases. We just wrapped an audit for a California-based law firm that is spending $750K/year on Google Ads and found that 0.08% of their search terms - 20 out of more than unique 25,000 searches that they had spent money on - were responsible for nearly half of all conversions (i.e. form fills, live chat leads and phone calls). That’s the 80/20 principle in action. And yet… Those search terms were scattered across 34 different campaigns and ad groups. Nothing about their campaign and ad group structure + use of match types and negative keywords allowed for precise control of budget, bidding, ad messaging and landing page experience for those "vital few" search terms. Their conversion tracking was counting Google Business Profile clicks to their website as primary conversion events 😬 Their campaigns had no clear separation between research intent (e.g. "what is CA personal injury law" and hire intent (e.g. "personal injury attorney near me"). Their top county (LA) drove over one-third of conversions - but was lumped in with the entire state The result? Google had no consistent and reliable signal to optimize toward, and the firm had no control over where their money went. If you’re running Google Ads for a law firm, remember: ✅ Optimize your ad campaigns to true lead indicators (calls, forms, chats) ✅ Segment campaigns by intent and geography ✅ Use your search term report to identify your breadwinners ✅ Ensure your campaign structure gives you the ability to control budget and double down on your winners (i.e. top performing search terms, demographics, etc.) Because growth rarely comes from bigger budgets - it comes from tighter focus. Most DTC brands doing over over $10M but under $100M ARR are leaving millions on the table for one simple reason: They treat every customer the same. If you’re not segmenting by RFM (recency, frequency, monetary), you’re guessing. The brands that break $100M engineer behavior by speaking differently to different buyers. Here’s the simple version I walk through in my new YouTube video: 1. Rabbits - recently engaged, never purchased Treat them like cold-to-warm: educate, nurture, handle objections, and close them in your flows, not just campaigns. 2. Loyal Dogs - buy often, low spend They love you, but they’re cheap. Use bundles, “buy more save more,” and bonus stacking to push their spend threshold. 3. Baby Whales - high spend, low frequency They already trust you with big orders, just not often. Fix the conversion mechanism with tailored offers, store credit, and messaging that acknowledges who they are. 4. Whales / Champions - top RFM customers Stop blasting them like everyone else. Build a paid membership / loyalty program (your version of Prime) with: - Exclusive products - Faster shipping - Extra store credit - Access, community, events 5. Lapsed Loyal - used to buy frequently, then churned Win them back with “here’s what’s new” messaging (products, mission, ambassadors) plus credit or perks tied to what they originally loved. 6. Lost Ships - ex-whales who disappeared Email is usually maxed out here. Use direct mail + Meta, and give them a serious reason to reconsider you: lifetime perk, high-value credit, or VIP unlock. The question isn’t “How do I get more customers?” It’s: “How do I design offers, journeys, and loyalty so the right customers stay for 10–20+ years?” I break each segment and strategy down in detail in the full video, including how to start with a simple flow setup and build from there. The DTC brands that will kick a$$ next year all have one thing in common. They’re not doing more marketing. They’re making their marketing work together.Here’s what the strong ones are doing differently 1. They use trends strategically Trends aren’t ignored... they’re evaluated. If a trend helps communicate a product benefit, overcome an objection, or reinforce a POV, they use it. If it’s just noise, it’s a pass. Trends are a vehicle. Strategy decides the destination. 2. Their content is mapped to the buyer journey Top-of-funnel: education and awareness. Mid-funnel: proof, differentiation, trust. Bottom-of-funnel: clarity, confidence, conversion. Product demos, UGC, reviews, comparisons, FAQs, founder POVs--all created with intent, not guesswork. 3. All channels are designed to support each other Paid social builds email lists. Email warms and converts. Ads retarget subscribers. Social reinforces the message everywhere. Nothing lives in a silo. Every channel has a job, and they work as a system, not a series of disconnected tactics. (Why we added email marketing into our service mix recently!) 4. They measure both reach and intent — and know which content does what Reach matters. It’s essential for top-of-funnel momentum. But it’s paired with deeper signals like saves, clicks, replies, and returning viewers. They’re not asking one post to do everything. They’re clear on whether a piece of content is meant to attract, educate, or convert. 5. They repeat what works (without fear) Reposting high-performing content isn’t lazy; it’s smart. I mean, a lot of people never saw it the first time--let's be honest. And those who did often need multiple touchpoints before they act. Winning brands refine and resurface proven ideas instead of constantly chasing something “new.” 6. Their marketing sounds human — not automated AI is a tool, not the voice. No content that exists just because AI made it faster. You can feel that there’s a human behind the brand, and that's what builds trust. Ultimately, the best brands treat social as part of a revenue engine, not a content obligation. Dear DTC Brands: Stop Treating Media Buying Like a Magic Bullet 🚫 Yesterday a founder showed me their Q1 plan. 90% of it was about scaling Meta spend. Zero mention of retention. Nothing about product development. No brand building strategy. Just "we need better media buyers." And that's exactly why they'll fail. Here's the uncomfortable truth about paid acquisition: Media buying is the accelerator, not the engine. You can have the world's best media buyer. If your product sucks, your LTV is trash, and your brand is forgettable, you're just burning cash faster. The math is brutal: Most DTC brands get 60-80% of their revenue from paid ads. And most DTC brands don't make it past year two. Correlation? Not a coincidence. Meanwhile, the brands crushing it long-term? 💸 $1,000 per email. That’s the fine you could face for ONE misleading subject line. It’s not just the federal CAN-SPAM Act. State UDAP laws let “the professionally offended” come after ecommerce brands and marketers. You can’t say… ❌ “10% off sitewide” if not all items are on sale ❌ “Today only” if the sale is extended ❌ “Did you forget this?” if the customer hasn’t even done anything yet Apologies don’t matter. Intent doesn’t matter. If it misleads, it’s illegal.
