Jeff is an award-winning journalist, author, and higher education strategist who helps universities navigate transformation.

Named one of LinkedIn's must-know Influencers and a LinkedIn Top Voice, he's a New York Times bestselling author, host of the "Future U." podcast (40,000 listeners), and author of the "Next" newsletter, which reaches 150,000 subscribers with insights on all things next for higher education.

For more than two-and-a-half decades, Jeff has provided in-depth analysis of the $750-billion higher-education industry for outlets including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, The Atlantic, and New York Magazine, as well as NPR, ABC, and CBS. This work has made him a sought-after speaker and consultant on university strategy and leadership.

He serves as special advisor to the president at Arizona State University, where he leads the Academy for Innovative Higher Education Leadership in partnership with Georgetown University and serves as a member of the EdPlus management committee. He was previously a visiting scholar at Georgia Tech's Center for 21st Century Universities, serving on the institution-wide Commission on Creating the Next in Higher Education.

Jeff is the author of four New York Times bestselling books on higher education: College (Un)Bound (2013), There Is Life After College (2016), Who Gets In and Why (2020)—named one of the year's most notable books by The New York Times—and Dream School: Finding the College That's Right for You (2025).

He spent 17 years at The Chronicle of Higher Education, where he served as top editor and led editorial operations, business development, and strategic initiatives for the nation's leading higher-education publication.
