The first thing I look at in any CPG investment isn't the product. It's the founder. I want someone with completely unrealistic, hyped up goals and ambition for their product. I'm literally looking for a delusional founder. But here's where it gets interesting. You need that irrational belief AND you need someone who's analytically sharp on the numbers. Both. Not one or the other. Because I see it all the time. Founders throwing around vanity metrics like door count. "Hey, we got 500 doors." Great. But what is the velocity? How many times is that customer coming back? And then there's the founders who are spread across multiple projects. Still working a full time job. Dabbling. That's a pass for me every single time. The person I want to back is all in. Investing their own money. Really being super bullish on it. The kind of person where no matter what happens, they're going to keep running through walls. You can teach someone strategy. You can't teach someone that energy. You can't teach that belief. Whatever it takes, I'm going to win. That's the founder I'm looking for.
