David Knight shared thisThe Rise of Machine Agents: The Autonomous Economy For fifty years, automation was about efficiency: getting a machine to perform a task faster than a human. Today, we are entering the era of agency. The next generation of machines (robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles) will no longer be simple assets. They will become active economic participants. They are gaining the ability to independently find goods, negotiate prices, and execute payments without humans in the loop. Here are the five structural shifts shaping this new landscape: • The Rise of B2M Commerce: As machines become customers, a massive Business-to-Machine (B2M) market will emerge. Entire industries will rise just to service autonomous fleets, including robotic repair bays, localized energy microgrids, and pay-per-download data marketplaces. • The Robot Cross-Over Point: Human labor is inflationary, but robot labor is deflationary. A general-purpose industrial robot costing 30,000 dollars can be amortized down to roughly 3.00 dollars per hour. Once a task falls below this floor, human labor cannot compete on cost. Cheap labor will soon come from a socket, not a population. • A New Orchestration Layer: For robots to transact fluidly across different manufacturers, owners, and networks, we need a financial infrastructure similar to what SWIFT is for banking. This network layer will securely handle machine identity, automated contracts, and millions of daily micro-transactions. • Data Over Hardware: In this economy, hardware is a commodity. The real competitive moat is proprietary workflow data. The highest value belongs to the companies that own the unique training loops and historical process data used to fine-tune generic AI models. • The Ghost Shift and Reshoring: Machines do not care about the sun. Operating during the "Ghost Shift" (2 AM to 5 AM) will effectively double the capacity of existing physical assets like roads and warehouses without pouring new concrete. Because shipping costs will soon outweigh automated labor costs, manufacturing will aggressively reshore back to local points of consumption. The Strategic Takeaway Going forward, physical output will be constrained only by compute and energy. This is the transition to zero-marginal-cost labor. The most lucrative opportunities sit right at the intersection of Fintech and Physical AI: the infrastructure platforms building secure identity networks and the payment rails for machine-to-machine micro-transactions. But if we did, you'd find those words on some of America's most consequential projects in its 250-year history: the Hoover Dam, the first nuclear reactor to generate electricity, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, and so much more. It's hard to imagine everyday American life without what Bechtel has helped build. Yet none of these projects came easy. They demanded new ideas, new technologies, and, above all, people bold enough to take on seemingly impossible challenges. That's what Bechtel people have done for 128 years. David Knight reacted on thisDavid Knight reacted on thisOne of the most consequential discoveries of the 20th century is marked by a small blue plaque a one-minute walk from my office. It hangs on the wall of Oxford’s Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, where in 1980 John Goodenough and his colleagues identified the cathode material that made the rechargeable lithium-ion battery possible. Nobody standing there in 1980 could have imagined what would follow. The first grid-scale lithium-ion battery was only connected in 2012. A single 5 MW project in Oregon. Today there are 267,000 MW globally. By 2030, forecasters expect between 800,000 and 1,200,000 MW. Every so often a technology stops being a pilot and scales rapidly. Solar did it. Onshore wind did it. Grid-scale batteries are doing it right now. For my latest Bright Spots issue I pulled fresh data from Modo Energy covering the four biggest benchmarked battery markets: Great Britain, Texas, California and Australia’s National Electricity Market. Together they have gone from under 5 GW in 2019 to around 45 GW today. Texas alone went from roughly 100 MW to over 14 GW in six and a half years. A more than hundredfold increase. And it keeps going. Every one of these markets added double- or triple-digit percentages to its fleet over the past year. Australia more than doubled its capacity in 2025. Three things stood out to me looking at the data: 1) Batteries are now big enough to move the grid. In California, storage is equivalent to about a third of peak demand. 2) The fleet is getting longer. In Texas, two-hour batteries overtook one-hour systems outright in mid-2025 as value shifts to moving energy across more of the day. 3) The units are getting bigger. Batteries of 200 MW or larger made up 43% of Great Britain’s 2025 pipeline and 74% of 2026’s. The era of small standalone projects is giving way to grid-scale megaprojects. This won’t be a smooth ride. In the most saturated markets, revenues per megawatt are falling as more storage chases the same market volatility. Australian battery capacity rose about 115% in twelve months while per-megawatt revenues fell roughly 64%. That’s a sign of a market maturing rather than failing. Coal has been and continues to be the largest source of electricity production in China. In 2026, China has produced the highest TWh of generation from coal in its entire history. To put that number into context, in 2025 for the entire year the US produced about 740 TWh of energy (roughly 1/3rd the amount for the first 5 months of 2026 in China).

The EndeaVR Project utilized leading-edge imaging technology to film, photograph and LIDAR-scan the entire Orbiter, resulting in the most comprehensive captures of a Space Shuttle interior ever assembled - the goal was to render ultra-res VR experiences by which individuals will be able to don VR viewers, and walk or 'fly' through the Orbiter, able to 'look' anywhere, even touch surfaces and turn switches, via eventual haptic feedback gloves etc.
