I've been on a women's health x AI journey for the past several months, and ŌURA's announcement today on a proprietary women's health-focused AI model is the most exciting development I've seen yet! AI is sweeping through healthcare in transformative ways and at lightning speed in an industry otherwise slow to adopt new technologies, with 40 million consumers using ChatGPT daily for health questions (before ChatGPT Health was even launched) and 40% of US doctors using OpenEvidence daily, touching 100 million patients. Machine learning, generative AI and agentic AI are driving biotech breakthroughs and improving efficiencies in healthcare in every imaginable way. In an under-researched and under-invested space like women's health, AI has tremendous potential to discover new biomarkers (Evvy), find new targets (OvartiX), drug hard-to-drug targets (PostEra) and support women throughout life phases (Ema - The AI for Women). Academics like Frida E Polli, PhD at MIT Female Medicine through Machine Learning (FMML) are driving research forward as well. Separately, health-focused chatbots have the potential to democratize access to information and inform personalized care in women's health. But LLMs are trained on existing data, and we know that this "corpus" of historical medical knowledge is largely male-centered. As LLMs are increasingly embedded in clinical decision-making and becoming the front door to healthcare for patients, how do we ensure that these tools adequately serve women and their health care needs?
