By 2026, high-value human interaction in retail can’t be accidental, it has to be engineered. Exceptional associate behavior isn’t about finding a few great personalities; it’s the result of deliberate leadership choices around hiring, training, incentives, and culture. When retailers get this right, expertise shows up consistently, not sporadically. Retail leadership must treat product knowledge and customer education as a core capability, not a “nice to have.” That means structured learning, protected time to build mastery, and tools that help associates translate knowledge into relevant recommendations in the moment. The objective isn’t memorization: it’s confidence, judgment, and knowing when and how to engage. Technology should amplify this capability, not attempt to replace it. Finally, what gets measured gets done (and repeated). If associates are rewarded only for speed and efficiency, expertise will always lose. Leaders need to explicitly recognize behaviors that build trust, expand baskets through relevance, and create customers who leave more informed than when they arrived. The retailers that win won’t talk about the human touch, they’ll operationalize it as a competitive advantage.
