“Probably Melissa's signature strength is her ability forge relationships on all fronts. Melissa started the Monetization program at Kohl's and hired me on to aid begin the Digital Vendor Marketing program, building out Kohl's retail media platform for brands. At the time, there was little understanding of advertising/marketing technology within the retail landscape and I watched as Melissa brought the merchandising organization and and key brand partners along on the journey of establishing a level of digital savviness. Starting from simple display ads and incrementally adding in more data sophistication, Melissa led the direction of the program that resulted in triple digit year-over-year growth of the Monetization program in our 4 years together and more than doubled the size of the team. Melissa has a warmth in her personality that people are attracted to. She loves to laugh and takes the extra step for the well-being of her team. A few months ago, I was talking to the CEO of a Fortune 50 company who asked me to send him curated reading material to better understand our space. That exercise caused me to reflect a lot on the state of coverage of the big moves in the digital space. I remember being one of the first people to support John Ebbert about the idea for AdExchanger 15+ years ago. I wore the limited edition "A" T-shirt proudly back then—it was an inside-baseball mystery that everyone asked about. I always proudly explained why I thought the little world of digital advertising would eventually be one of the primary driving forces for the digital economy. I’m so proud of how far our industry has come, how far the open internet has come. But now seems to be less curiosity and more drama and cynicism. AdExchanger no longer leads the conversation; and when it does, it misleads people about what is really going on. They didn’t cover the google trial much. They’ve missed stories like the one Will pointed out yesterday All trade press is at its best when it is objective but invested. It cares about the industry it covers. It celebrates progress and mourns the setbacks. It points at the big swings, whether they hit or miss. Great journalists are curious. Cynical and snarky can be a side dish, but not the whole meal. To be clear, this isn’t me complaining to the umpire about balls and strikes. In moments like Will Doherty points out, I think it is important that we point out that the umpire isn’t always watching the same game as the rest of us. I care about journalism deeply, and I want to see it succeed. At TTD, we’ve made great investments to improve the monetization of journalism because the 4th estate is important to a functioning society. Who is the Will McAvoy or MacKenzie McHale of our space? I ask because I want to support them and celebrate them. BTW, if you haven’t watched Newsroom on HBO, I’m giving you homework :) But seriously, post a name in the comments. I’d like to meet with them. Great journalism cares about truth, not just drama. If there are voices that cover our space with the kind of curiosity and excitement our industry needs. I would love to amplify them. A trillion-dollar industry needs good journalists. Who are the best?

Interesting to see how this affects retail media networks with partnerships with Roku: Fox agreed to buy Roku in a cash-and-stock transaction with a $22 billion enterprise value, a deal that would give the media company ownership of one of the largest TV streaming companies. Currently, Roku reaches more than 100 million streaming households worldwide. Its software powered 44 percent of the time American spent watching connected TVs in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the two companies. Fox and Roku say the combined business would rank third in U.S. television by share of viewing. Roku produces both hardware and streaming services, the latter is the more profitable arm of the business. Its devices business—which includes its streaming players and Roku-made TVs—generated $118 million in revenue but posted a $19 million gross loss in the first quarter of 2026. By contrast, its software-driven platform, which makes money from advertising and subscriptions, generated $1.13 billion in revenue and $584 million in gross profit.
