The biggest threat to PE value creation isn't technology adoption, it's the speed at which competitors are industrializing AI across their portfolios while others are still funding one-off pilots. In the era of applied AI, every portfolio company doesn't need its own approach to data foundations, AI governance, cybersecurity, cloud economics, workflow automation, and enterprise modernization. Rebuilding these capabilities deal-by-deal is becoming an expensive tax on EBITDA growth and holding-period performance. The winners will treat AI as a firm-level platform, not a company-level project: 🔹 Build once, deploy many 🔹 Compress time-to-value from months to days 🔹 Scale proven AI use cases across the entire value chain 🔹 Compound learnings across the portfolio instead of resetting at exit The question PE leaders should be asking isn't "How do we implement AI at this company?" It's "How many turns of value are we losing by rebuilding the same capabilities across every company we own?" Applied AI is rapidly becoming a portfolio-wide operating model. We are already seeing this from the recent joint announcements from many PE firms, hyperscalers, and model providers. Firms that industrialize it will create separation. Not only was it my first day as a cofounder of MetaMonster, but it was Belle Gordon's first day as a full time SEO Specialist at HelloSEO. She is my first full-time hire, and I literally could not have made a better choice. I met Belle last year when I was the Entrepreneur is Residence at Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. After expressing an interest in SEO (a rare treat!), I offered her an internship with HelloSEO. Over her nine month internship, she has become integral to HelloSEO and my right hand man. She has sharpened her SEO skills and continuously come to the table with fresh ideas both for HelloSEO and for our clients. It was a no-brainer to offer her a full-time job after graduation. Belle, I'm so excited to continue growing HelloSEO with you. This is the beginning of so many exciting chapters!

Mitch Gordon liked thisMitch Gordon liked thisYesterday’s IBM story is sending out a bunch of ripples, with a softer than expected Q2, driving a drop in share price by >20%. I found Arvind’s explanation very interesting. In the last weeks of June, clients redirected capex toward servers, storage and memory, at the expense of software and consulting, hence cannot be a uniquely IBM story. Here’s why in my view… The big four hyperscalers plan up to $630B of CAPEX in 2026, about 62% above last year’s record. Roughly three quarters of it, some $450bn, is AI infrastructure. Goldman has the 2025 to 2027 build at $1.15 trillion, more than double the prior three years combined. And what happened with all the hardware invested last year and what does it tell us about future value? Well, in 2025, AI services returned around $25B of revenue against more than $250B of infrastructure spend, so about ten cents of revenue for every dollar of capex. So the question is, is hardware killing software, or is it just standing at the front the queue? Firstly, we need to remember that all that silicon is inert. A GPU that runs little software isn’t much use. At some point every rack has to earn its keep, and it does that by running software that does a job. If we look back CAPEX peaks tend to lead revenue peaks by two to three years. The money going into hardware now is laying the track the next software cycle gets sold on. Here’s where IBM software strategy and I partly disagree - I don’t believe the winners are horizontal. Value is already moving to software that operates like an OS (RedHat) and/or knows the vertical industry it serves - Fibre, Power, Healthcare, Defence. Horizontal software is increasingly imitable. So, I don’t think the question is whether software recovers. It’s mostly an issue of timing versus repricing and when the infrastructure is in situ, firms will need to own software that can take unique advantage of all that available AI hardware.
