From UnitedHealthcare’s standoff with Johns Hopkins to Northern Light’s dispute with Anthem, the common thread isn’t just money or contract language — it’s communication breakdown. As Randall Farmer of the Delaware Health Information Network put it, “Everything is relationship-centric.” That’s exactly what Chris Voss preaches in Never Split the Difference: successful negotiators focus on building trust, empathy, and tactical understanding before they ever talk numbers. Whether it’s a multimillion-dollar network contract or a strategic partnership discussion, the real leverage comes from human connection — not position. In healthcare (and in business), relationships can turn “order takers” into trusted advisors — the difference between a public standoff and a private solution. One conversation handled with empathy can often resolve what a hundred legal letters can’t.
