The U.S. Treasury’s release of an AI Lexicon and a Financial Services AI Risk Management Framework is a meaningful step for the financial sector. It signals that the conversation around AI is moving beyond experimentation and into something more operational, governed, and accountable. Treasury says the two resources are intended to give the industry a common language for AI and a practical framework for managing AI risk in financial services. One of the biggest barriers to responsible AI adoption is not just the technology itself. It is inconsistency in terminology, uneven governance, and the lack of a shared structure for evaluating risk across the AI lifecycle. Treasury explicitly calls out those challenges and positions these resources as a way to support clearer communication, stronger oversight, improved operational resilience, and more robust AI cybersecurity. What stands out to me is: AI adoption in banking will not scale on enthusiasm alone. It will scale when institutions build the discipline to govern it well. That means: clear definitions, practical risk management, accountability across the lifecycle, and an approach that is flexible enough to work for institutions of different sizes and complexity. Treasury says the framework is designed to do exactly that, adapting NIST’s AI RMF to the realities of financial services. For banks, this is the direction of travel. This is the kind of work the industry needs more of: practical, implementation-focused guidance that helps institutions move faster without abandoning governance.
