When I went to engineering school, the professors did not allow us to use calculators, even though they were readily available to help us with our math problems. Instead, they had us use slide rules because they wanted us to use our brains. This was the most valuable lesson I took away from the class was never to let go of the ability to use your mind and your imagination. Its good to use AI to help get the job done, but never overuse it and risk losing control. The question in the comment was "In your experience, where do you think human judgment still creates the most value that AI cannot easily replace?" I thought about it for a while and responded, "AI in its current state does not have imagination so as I see it, AI is best suited for being delegated to performing repetitive tasks that become prone to human error due to a boredom factor. For instance, in the IT world, if programmers and system designers use AI to help create their programs, they must still create the design and logic for the AI to then create the program code. The AI advantage is that it can create code free of syntax errors in a fraction of the time originally needed for program coding. However the design and logic remain in the domain of the human..The human must design the process that derives the solution." As a billboard, it becomes a dramatic surface for a single slogan and a beautiful image, all mood and no practical messaging. As a storage room, the page blurts everything you want to say all at once, making the viewer feel as though they have walked into a room where every person is trying to speak all at the same time. A good website does not exist only to look attractive, and it is not there to carry the entire business on its back. Ernst & Young, the Big Four advisory firm that literally makes billions consulting on cybersecurity and digital transformation, just had a breach because they got hit through a third-party IT support ticketing system. Let me say that again. A ticketing system. That's how these attackers got in and downloaded client tax documents and personal financial data from March through mid-April this year. This isn't some sophisticated nation-state attack. This is a basic supply chain compromise. Attackers found their way into a third-party support platform used by EY's IT teams, and nobody noticed for weeks. The breach wasn't discovered until April 23rd, which means they were exposed for nearly a month before detection. And what were they storing on that system? Client documents. Tax information. Personal and financial data used to prepare tax filings. Exactly the kind of sensitive information that should be locked down with multiple layers of protection. What makes this even more absurd is that this was completely preventable. Third-party access to sensitive systems should have had robust authentication, encryption at rest, continuous monitoring, and strict data classification controls. You know, the exact things EY tells its clients to implement. A firm of 406,000 people, operating in 150 countries, with revenues approaching $54 billion, and they couldn't secure a support ticketing system? That's not a technology problem. That's a prioritization problem. That's a culture problem. You can't claim to advise the world on cybersecurity while leaving the front door open on systems that hold your clients' most sensitive information. The irony here is almost painful. EY publishes thought leadership on cyber resilience, risk management, and digital trust. They advise organizations on how to protect their data. And yet, their own breach notification reads like a textbook example of what not to do. Store sensitive data on third-party platforms with insufficient controls, fail to detect unauthorized access for weeks, and then scramble to contain the damage after the fact. They eventually offered identity monitoring through Experian, which is the standard playbook, but that's damage control, not security. I think what's most frustrating is the credibility issue here. How do you walk into a boardroom and tell executives to prioritize cybersecurity when your own organization couldn't keep a support ticketing system secure? This is the kind of incident that erodes trust not just in EY, but in the entire advisory industry. Clients expect better from firms charging premium rates for expert guidance. The Access database with a name like a threat. It's the punchline of every architecture review and the first box on every "future state" slide marked for retirement. The part missing from the slide: it may be the most reliable thing you own. It survived four CIOs, six reorgs, and every modernization initiative sent to replace it. Not because of politics. Every replacement project eventually uncovered the same thing: 30 years of undocumented business rules, edge cases created by decisions nobody remembers, and exception handling added after failures nobody wants repeated. The system isn't legacy because it's old. It's legacy because it won. It absorbed complexity until it became the only complete record of how the business actually works. Meanwhile, the modern stack pages someone every weekend. The same stack featured in the conference slides. Before you fund another replacement, fund the work that usually gets skipped. Trace the rules. Document the exceptions. The retirement conversation gets easier once you know what you're retiring. Companies keep skipping that work, then act surprised when the replacement fails. Mock the monolith if you want. It will still process tonight's batch.
