Nearly 15 years ago, when we started KSI, there was little evidence amassed proving the thesis that distributed resources would provide a net benefit and cost savings to the grid; however we had a conviction. Our early investors understood that premise and joined us on our mission to create a cleaner and more resilient grid. Today, this report does one of the best jobs breaking down the benefits. Kudos to New York Solar Energy Industries Association, Synapse Energy Economics and Coalition for Community Solar Access for assembling and sharing this information.

EPA issues battery storage safety guidelines As battery energy storage systems (BESS) expand rapidly across the US, new federal guidance now offers direction on how projects can be sited and permitted responsibly. Local requirements around siting, zoning, and permitting often extend to issues like noise, which is an area that can be critical to project acceptance. Careful measurement and modeling of sound from BESS facilities helps ensure they not only meet standards but also fit sustainably into surrounding communities. International Electric Power is developing a 944 MW behind-the-meter, gas-fired plant to power a new data center in Pennsylvania. ⚡️ The data center is being developed in Greene County. It will also include battery storage and a backup grid connection to ensure continued reliability. 👍 IEP is a private power developer. Essential Utilities, Inc., which is publicly held, will invest $26 million in the project to develop a water treatment capability for the facility through its subsidiary Aqua. Essential’s other subsidiary, People, is the biggest gas utility in the state and will provide gas consulting and energy management services. This announcement comes at a tumultuous time in the region, as many large loads are facing trouble securing power within the PJM Interconnection. Thanks to historically complicated processes and a lengthy queue, many big projects are waiting too long to secure electricity. 💡 IEP plans to collocate behind-the-meter power to avoid PJM altogether. However, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission launched a review earlier this year related to colocating large loads and power plants within PJM. That review is still ongoing. As electricity demand in the US continues to grow—primarily due to data centers, new manufacturing, and electrification—we must find ways to accommodate this increasing demand. A new report from the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA), “Load Growth: What States Are Doing to Accommodate Increasing Electric Demand," surveys the causes of electricity load growth and outlines what states are doing to meet the challenge. John B. Larson (CT-01) announced $350,000 in new federal funding for CONNSTEP at Infinity Fuel Cell and Hydrogen, Inc. in Windsor, to strengthen the competitiveness of Connecticut’s small and medium-sized manufacturers and grow the state’s hydrogen and fuel cell energy industry.   View the full press conference here.  “As a founding member and co-chair of the House Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus, I have been proud to work for years to support the continued advancement of clean hydrogen energy right here in Connecticut,” said Larson. “Even in the face of federal funding cuts, I’m proud to work with our local partners like CONNSTEP to support Connecticut manufacturers, like Infinity Fuel Cell, and to ensure our state remains a national and global clean energy leader. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to extend tax credits that support this growing industry and bring home critical funding to develop and deploy American-made clean energy in our communities.”  Larson secured this new funding as part of a government funding package that passed the House and Senate in January with bipartisan support, including the support of Senator Richard Blumenthal, and was signed into law.       “This $350,000 federal investment for CONNSTEP will strengthen the Connecticut Hydrogen Fuel Cell Consortium’s work to advance innovation of clean energy and expand opportunities for manufacturers critical to our national defense and economic security. I’m proud to support initiatives such as this that empower Connecticut businesses to develop cutting-edge solutions to the climate and energy crisis while creating good jobs,” said Senator Blumenthal.  Last year, Larson introduced the bipartisan Technology for Energy Security Act to extend the fuel cell tax credit and support the continued growth of this clean and affordable technology.
