Dear SDR Managers, If you're not weighting lead quality in your comp plan, your leaving money on the table. Not all “qualified” leads are created equal. And people, no matter how driven they are, naturally take the path of least resistance. (sometimes subconsciously) So if the payout is the same for the high-quality, high-effort lead vs. the low-quality, low-effort lead, Your SDRs will lean toward volume, not quality. Then we blame the rep when really the incentives are misaligned. Weight high quality leads heavier. Make it CLEAR what “high quality” means. 80% of an SDR’s time should be spent on the leads most likely to convert. 20% on the rest, with automation handling the bottom layer. Your comp plan should reflect that.

Hundreds… or probably Thousands start their SDR job every single day. And very quickly, most of them run into the same question. Should I focus on calls, emails, or LinkedIn outreach? Some people say cold calling is the best. Others say email works better. And some say LinkedIn is where everything happens now. The truth is, it’s usually not about the channel. Outbound mostly comes down to two things: Consistency and Relevance. Consistency is the easier part. Send the email. Make the call. Follow up. Then follow up again. Most replies don’t come from the first message anyway. They usually happen after a few touches. The harder part is relevance. A lot of outreach talks about the product. “Hi, we help companies streamline workflows with our AI-powered platform…” Buyers read that and think: Great… another email to ignore. What works better is talking about their world. What are they responsible for? What metrics do they care about? What problems are people in that role usually dealing with? When your message connects to something they actually care about, conversations become a lot easier. A simple outbound flow can look like this. Do a little research ---------> Send a short email ----------> Follow up with a call --------------> Connect on LinkedIn ---------> And keep following up. Nothing fancy. Just consistent and relevant outreach. Because outbound isn’t some secret formula. It’s mostly just showing up a few times without sounding like a robot. And trust me… buyers can spot a robot email from a mile away.

SDR → AE isn’t a promotion. It’s a job change. More pipeline ≠ AE readiness. Quota ownership, deal risk, forecasting, and closing muscle are what matter. Stop “waiting your turn.” Start building proof. SDRs who get promoted do 3 things early: • Run discovery like an AE • Understand the full sales cycle (not just meetings) • Think in deals, not activities Bookings > meetings. Always. Want to stand out? Operate like an AE before the title: • Sit in on late-stage calls • Build deal plans for reps • Call out risk in pipeline reviews • Learn pricing, legal, procurement Managers promote certainty, not potential. Hard truth: Most SDRs fail to become AEs because they never stop thinking like SDRs. If you can answer: “Why will this deal close and when?” You’re already ahead of 90%.
