Shaaya Sharifi shared thisThis week I had the privilege of leading a private equity operating bootcamp for an outstanding group of Executive MBA students from Wharton, Booth, and Kellogg. Despite coming from completely different backgrounds, including physicians, scientists, military operators, entrepreneurs, and senior executives across industry, everyone shared the same question: "Can someone like me break into private equity as an operator?" Over five sessions, we reframed that question entirely. Beyond the tactics and strategy, the biggest idea I wanted everyone to would leave with was this: The strongest candidates don't just have experience. They have a clear investment thesis. Every investor makes decisions based on an investment thesis. The best candidates understand they're no different. They're not simply interviewing for a role. They're asking a firm to invest in them. Your experience is the evidence. Your thesis explains why that experience creates value. Positioning is how you communicate that thesis. Most private equity recruiting advice was built around the traditional investment banking pipeline. It asks non-traditional candidates to imitate a path that was never designed for them. I know that firsthand. I've broken into private equity, technology, and venture from non-traditional backgrounds each time, without the conventional path or deep connections. Looking back, I didn't realize I was building a thesis. I was just learning how to explain why my unconventional path created a different kind of value. That's exactly why so many talented operators struggle. The goal isn't to out-banker the bankers. The goal is to articulate a compelling investment thesis and position your experience the way an investor evaluates businesses. That means translating your story from domain language into deal language. Not: "I managed operations." Instead: "I owned a multi-site P&L, expanded margins, improved capital allocation, negotiated supplier contracts, and built repeatable operating playbooks that resulted in X outcomes." Same experience. Completely different positioning. A stronger thesis. The strongest candidates don't win because they have the most traditional resume. They win because they make it obvious how they've created enterprise value and why those same value-creation levers can be repeated across an entire portfolio. Ironically, it's the same conversation I have every day with founders. Whether you're pitching yourself, raising capital, or preparing a business for an eventual exit, investors are looking for the same thing. A compelling thesis backed by evidence. Positioning isn't about sounding impressive. It's about making your value immediately obvious. People don't just value what you've done. They value what they understand.

The hardest part is knowing whether you’re making the right decision when everyone else around the table has done this dozens or even hundreds of times. The buyer acquires companies for a living. The investment banker runs transactions for a living. The attorney negotiates deals for a living. For most founders, this is the first and only time they’ll ever sell the company they’ve spent years building. That’s not just an experience gap. It’s an information gap. And information gaps create expensive decisions. I’ve noticed that founders rarely start by asking me, “How do I maximize valuation?” They ask me: • What’s my company actually worth? • Is now the right time? • Can I trust the people advising me? • What don’t I know that could cost me? Those aren’t valuation questions. They’re trust question. The best advisors don’t just help founders negotiate transactions. They help founders close the information gap that influences every major decision a founder makes. The reason is because enterprise value isn’t primarily shaped at the negotiating table. It’s shaped by the quality of decisions made long before anyone starts negotiating.

Shaaya Sharifi shared thisOne thing I've noticed over the past few months is that when founders bring up a future exit, the conversation rarely starts with, "I want to sell." What they essentially tell me they want is more options. They want the ability to step back without the business slowing down. They want to grow profitably. They want to know they could raise capital if the right opportunity came along. They want to attract better leadership, make acquisitions, create more financial security for their family, or simply have the freedom to decide what's next on their own terms. It's changed the way I think about enterprise value. I don't see it just as an exit strategy. I see it as a strategy for creating optionality. After speaking with founders, investors, attorneys, wealth advisors, and family offices over the past year, one theme keeps resurfacing. The businesses that earn the strongest valuations usually weren't built around an exit and a horizon. They were built to be resilient, transferable, well-run, and less dependent on the founder. The valuation is simply the market recognizing those qualities. Founders who build businesses like this rarely feel forced into a decision or a timeline. That's the lens through which I'm building Isle Ventures and advising founder-led businesses. Enterprise value creates optionality. The stronger the business, the more choices a founder has, whether that's selling, growing, raising capital, transitioning leadership, or simply continuing to own a great business. Shaaya Sharifi posted thisLast week I wrapped month 2 of building my advisory practice. Like venture, you only hear the story following the success so this is my attempt to build publicly with honesty, in hopes it provides people visibility into the process and maybe the courage to hit go. What's working: my bias to action is creating momentum and momentum inevitably generates opportunities. 1. I delivered my first phase 1 engagement report to my initial client. I asked directly if it was worth the price tag and the response was a resounding yes. I have my first positive client testimonial under my own brand. He also indicated he wants to move to phase 2 execution with me in some capacity to implement my value creation roadmap. That is initial market validation of what I am providing to founders. 2. I have commenced my second engagement which took 2 months and many conversations to close. 3. I have 2 verbal commitments from serial entrepreneurs and we are actively shaping what partnership together looks like. 5. I have a pipeline of engagements that includes equity, project, and retainer based compensation, diversifying revenue and upside opportunities. 6. All clients and opportunities were generated via referrals from past clients, friends, and the advisor network I started building out. 7. I have met over 3 dozen top-shelf trusted advisors 1:1. Thats about 2 every working day. When the best advisors understand your value prop and core values, they will make high value intros. What I have learnt: It takes double the work, time, and money than you expect. 1. The sales cycle can be long. It can be weeks with fast movers that you have a mutual connection with but more often than not it takes months of developing the relationship and trust. Being deliberate about how you engage and not overcomunicating can be the difference between a won and lost client. That is where having discipline and patience makes all the difference. Being honest with myself, I think it has cost me a client. 2. Just because you have market validation, does not mean you have product-market fit. That takes longer than 2 months and a few engagements to prove out. You must be willing to iterate based on real-time insights from your ICP. The winners in the space, just like in any venture, never start with the winning formula, they pivot to win on solving real pain points, true differentiation, and delivering tremendous value and customer delight. 3. You must outwork the room. Work rooms that matter, deliver free value, build the foundation tightly from the outset, and you are just in the game. Do all the things you don't like doing on top and you have a real chance to create something meaningful. In an era where AI can accelerate almost everything, trust remains one of the few advantages that still has to be earned.

Shaaya Sharifi shared thisThere are very few people in this world who are givers, connectors of people, and extremely deliberate. My friend, Rick, is one of those people. He has been a mentor to me in this domain of running my new business as a deliberate connector of the most elite professionals - high in character, capability, and expertise. He has never asked me for a thing during the time I have known him, all the while making introductions to people who will change the course of my business and the number of people I will have an opportunity to deeply impact. These are professionals whom I am now building lifelong relationships and friendships with. This is Rick. Rick is also a warrior - in the true sense of the word. Someone who does not know how to quit and will keep fighting, stoic and relentless, with a smile on his face. This is a man who has beat back cancer twice and is facing it head on a third time with an impending heart operation. But through it all, he chooses to continue to do meaningful work, keep his body in shape, and be helpful to others. I admire Rick. I tell him that every time I see him. His resolve and his attitude towards life and its challenges, borne out of his faith, gives me added strength and tenacity. I want my network to understand what an amazing human AND professional looks like. And I want Rick to see that his friends will always take the call to action to help and support his journey back to full health so that he and his family can focus on just that. Sharp point. An interesting investment question is where value accrues if models converge. If intelligence becomes a commodity, the moat likely shifts from the technology itself to execution, distribution, trust, and proprietary context.

I have spent a long time building a reputation, and I cannot give time carelessly without risking it. So I have a framework. Three things. If I see all three, I find a way. If I don't, I move on. The first is integrity. I need to believe this person will not compromise my reputation. It has nothing to do with whether their business succeeds or fails. It is their character, and whether I can trust it. The second is energy. I want to be genuinely excited to spend time with them. Warmth, humor, forward motion. The third is outlier potential. Something specific in them that makes me believe they could do something truly extraordinary. That they could actually change the world. Integrity. Energy. Outlier signal. Most people optimize for the pitch. What you are actually being evaluated on is the person.

Yesterday Lauden Wood at BuildOps posted a pic of him and the team in some camo swag. So naturally, I walked in and grabbed some for myself (shoutout Michael Sasser for having me in office). Worked with 1 seller on Social Selling & LinkedIn, then supported the entire sales team for their offsite, then another seller. Been a cool 18 months with these folks, big fan of what they have built and are continuing to build. Kinda bizarre when I stopped to think about it though. Shaaya Sharifi liked thisShaaya Sharifi liked thisAt 30, I sold my first company for $15M. My cut of that was 4.8%. I had to move back in with my parents at age 30. My parents' joked saying "what the hell are you doing living with us again?" when I moved back in. That's what 4.8% ownership buys you… I'd dreamed about that exit for years. I spent 5 years in NYC making $120K/yr, unable to save anything (thats NYC for you) w/ four co-founders. We raised about $3.5M total. Then it happened… “Bantam Live, acquired by Constant Contact”. $15M exit. My ownership at closing = 4.8%. Gross proceeds = $709,275. After federal and state taxes = $497,982. Nobody should cry for me, that's solid money. But if you run the numbers on it out of $15M, as a co-founder, I kept 3.3% of it. I was now a founder with "an exit". But in all actuality, I had basically made four years of OK salary. And for the sake of providing clarity here, I'm very grateful for this experience. We were ahead of our time and I believe Bantam could have been huge if we'd kept going. But there was nobody in my life who could tell me, unless we were building a unicorn, what the likely outcome would be, given the dilution and my percentage. I would go on to take $400k of that $498k and hire a dev agency to build Groove. Fast-forward 15 years. The company I built from that $400K is 88.02% mine. And it pays me the entire net of that exit, roughly half a million dollars, every 3-4 months. My exit paid me once and got a day's worth of press releases. The other company that TechCrunch doesn't even know exists pays me quarterly, with no board of directors or VC’s or any other decision makers involved. If you look up Bantam live, you could find those press releases somewhere. Absolutely nobody reads them, myself included.

There are games you're especially well suited to play. There are specific ways to secure below-market input costs. There are influential people who will help you because you've helped them (or simply because you've invested in the relationship). There are channels that allow you to spread messages far and wide for free (if the message is compelling). And all of this is possible over shockingly short time horizons. Lock in for six months and you'll be amazed at how the scales tip. This is the stuff folks rarely talk about, but they should. Because it's often the difference between winning and losing.

Shaaya Sharifi liked thisShaaya Sharifi liked thisI’m the Head of Finance at Clay and I have an unbiased take: our strategic finance team is the most creative team at the company. I know the reputation finance usually has: constantly saying no, enforcing budgets, endless approvals and red tape. Our team is intentionally built differently. They sit side by side with operating leaders and spend all of their time tackling the hardest problems. It brings me back to what I loved most about investing, but with much higher velocity and clearer impact. Here's a recent example on the team that I was both very impressed by, and wish I thought of myself! Isaac Chen joined two months ago and immediately took on a problem every B2B company has and almost nobody solves well: how do you size a post-sales book? The default is top-down. Give every rep 20 accounts worth $2M and score the accounts so the books are roughly equal. But how do you know how much a rep can handle, and whether they’re afforded the right amount of time to focus on different parts of their job, like onboarding or ongoing adoption? Usually, you have to test by going live and watching what breaks - are people staying up until 2am, or is churn creeping up? With books, the iteration cycles are long (customers don’t like frequent change), and a dynamic system means you’re never right. Isaac flipped it. He built a bottoms-up model of capacity. Instead of starting with account counts, he modeled what a rep can actually do in a month: he used inputs from our customer journey of how much time an onboarding customer needs vs. a ramped one vs. an expansion, and looked at the mix of customers based on our business’s growth projections. Those inputs, combined with a generous allocation of independent time to explore Clay and internal meetings, outputted the appropriate book size. Now it's not a guess. We know what each account demands based on its stage, and each teammate has the right amount on their plate. It's an acute problem at Clay because our post-sales team runs full-stack: onboarding, adoption, and expansion, all with one point of contact. While it’s more consultative, it’s also more complex to model. Isaac took the problem and came up with a blank-sheet solution that created clarity for the team, so they can focus on our customers. This is the kind of work our strat fin team does every day (seriously!). And we're hiring.
