One More Competitor Emerges for TSMC! Chen Fengxin Discusses Insider Leaking 2nm Technology: This Company Treasures It Like a Priceless Asset TSMC recently faced a major internal leak scandal involving its proprietary 2-nanometer chip process technology. Several former and current employees, including three engineers detained under Taiwan’s National Security Act, were found to have illicitly transferred key yield-improvement data to Tokyo Electron (TEL), a Japanese semiconductor equipment giant and shareholder in Japan’s Rapidus. The incident has raised concerns about potential damage to TSMC’s technological lead and national security implications. Rapidus, established in late 2022 with strong backing from Japanese conglomerates and government subsidies, aims to mass-produce 2-nanometer chips by 2027. Although initially regarded skeptically due to its lack of prior manufacturing experience, Rapidus announced in July 2025 successful trial production of 2-nanometer chips, inviting customers to test its process. The company uses the same gate-all-around (GAA) architecture licensed from IBM as TSMC, but its competitiveness hinges on yield improvement, where TSMC has unmatched expertise and rapid advancement. Insider information allegedly leaked to TEL focused on yield improvement, which would be particularly valuable to a company like Rapidus already capable of 2-nanometer production but struggling with yields. The former TEL chairman, Tetsuro Higashi, now chairs Rapidus, illustrating a close relationship between the two entities. The involvement of TEL and Rapidus has created geopolitical complexities, as U.S. government approval was required for IBM’s technology transfer to Japan, and international legal actions may ensue. TSMC continues to dominate the advanced semiconductor process market, supplying major clients such as Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, and is on track to mass-produce 2-nanometer chips by the end of 2025. However, the leak has introduced uncertainty about the company’s technological edge and increased competition from Rapidus, alongside established rivals Intel and Samsung.
