I am privileged to participate in the SAP AI Tour in New Delhi on September 19th at Pullman Aerocity. One of the key takeaways is launch of SAP Sovereign Cloud in India. As data and clouds go regional, there is growing urgency to adapt to an increasingly localized digital era. Around the world, governments are introducing regional laws requiring local data residency or processing. Take Europe’s Gaia-X sovereign cloud initiative, or the string of increasingly common hyper-local data laws like the EU’s GDPR, India’s DPDP Act, Canadian provincial rules, California’s CCPA, and many others. The launch of SAP Sovereign Cloud is more than just a new product—it is a cornerstone in India’s journey toward becoming a digitally empowered, self-reliant nation. Recently SAP formally launched its Sovereign Cloud offering in India, specifically designed for organizations that handle critical data and assets linked to national security. With SAP’s Sovereign Cloud, India now has access to a global-grade, future-ready framework that combines compliance, flexibility, and innovation. SAP Sovereign Cloud is designed as a full-stack framework, spanning infrastructure, platform, applications, and AI. By combining SAP’s sovereign controls with an open-source foundation, it delivers flexibility and innovation while meeting the highest sovereignty standards. Customers can now choose from a range of deployment models, including SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site in customer data center, and a hyperscaler-based option ensuring full alignment with their sovereignty and operational requirements. What SAP Sovereignty Cloud means At first glance, the Sovereignty Cloud onsite solution may appear to be akin to SAP Cloud ERP Private, Customer Datacenter (CDC), however, this is not the case. While both solutions are fully managed by SAP, installed within a customer datacenter, and provided as a service, they differ significantly in their approach to external access restrictions. The SAP CDC solution necessitates external connectivity from the customer datacenter to SAP or other hyperscale clouds for services such as BTP, monitoring, management, and SaaS solutions, allowing for remote management by personnel who do not need to be on-site. The Sovereign Cloud onsite operates in a fully isolated environment, where BTP and Joule are accessible locally without requiring any outbound connections. Monitoring and management responsibilities are handled by local on-site team. The SAP Cloud ERP Private, customer datacenter (CDC), solution is more flexible and at the same time offers improved data sovereignty over Cloud ERP Private on hyperscale options.
