I was on a workforce strategy call recently with a leader in accounting services. One of their people had just gone through a role change. New responsibilities. New pressure. Same expectations. The easy move is to wait. Watch the metrics. See if it becomes a problem. Step in once it does. She didn’t wait. She reached out before anything slipped. Asked how the change was actually landing. Not the KPIs. The person. It turned out the transition was harder than it looked from the outside. A short conversation, early, was enough to reset it. Here’s the thing nobody says out loud -> by the time performance drops, you’re not solving a problem anymore. You’re doing damage control. Checking in early isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s the cheapest retention strategy you have. More people leave from silence than from bad news. I was on a tour bus in Knoxville, Tennessee in July 2008. Blazing hot outside. The economy in free fall. And I was doing math in my head that was making me physically shake. Our members were washing six times a month. Our membership was priced at a six times breakeven. If we lowered prices and they kept washing that often, our costs would skyrocket. We would not just shrink our margins. We would lose everything. For years our peer group had been telling us to lower our prices and grow the membership. And every year my dad and I would smile and say we know what we are doing. But sitting on that bus I knew. I had been clinging to what felt safe. My dad turned to me and said what if our members just keep washing as frequently as they do now. I said Dad, we cannot be the only region in the country whose members behave completely differently. It scares me too. Maybe doing nothing is the bigger risk. So we jumped. We lowered the prices. We redesigned the membership. Monthly recurring revenue went from $25,000 to $1.8 million. The shivering stopped. Most leaders never make that call. Not because they do not see the opportunity. Because the math is scary enough to make your smartwatch think you started a new workout. It happened on Christmas Eve while I was sitting between my two young children, reading them a bedtime story. One email appeared. Something about it didn’t feel right. But instead of listening to that quiet voice inside me, I chose speed over reflection. That single decision changed the course of my life. I’ve learned that decision drift doesn’t begin with bad intentions. It begins in ordinary moments when pressure, urgency, and distraction silence our judgment.
