Back in 2010, when I joined Amazon as a full-time SDE, my first few months of code reviews were absolutely brutal. I would be so proud of a feature. Clean build, tests passing, worked in my dev environment. Then a senior engineer would leave multiple comments with critical feedback. It was painful to read. Some days, it felt like I did not belong there at all. But over time, those same reviews helped me ship great things like: – A service that archived terabytes of data from Oracle into S3 using Java and messaging queues. – Load tests, capacity planning, and game days to get systems ready for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. – An automated workflow that audited service and infra readiness for high-traffic sale events. – An Amazon-wide “zero-infrastructure operations” framework that fully automated service launches and saved around 36,000 developer hours. None of that happened because I was “naturally good.” It happened because reviewers kept forcing me to think about: – Failure modes, not just happy paths. – Operability, not just correctness. – Simplicity, not cleverness. So when you get a “brutal” review: – Breathe. – Thank the reviewer. – Turn each comment into a checklist item for your next PR. – Ask “what pattern were you using in your head when you suggested this?” and write it down. Skill grows faster than you think. Confidence always lags behind. Do not let that gap convince you that you are behind everyone else. You might just be one tough review away from the work you are actually capable of.

The recent proposal to impose a $100,000 fee on companies for every H1B employee is deeply worrying. For companies, this creates a massive financial burden. It’s not just about new hires — even retaining existing H1B employees could become unsustainable. This will likely push firms to cut back on international talent, no matter how skilled. For Indian engineers, especially those planning to pursue a Master’s in the US, this raises serious questions. Many invest huge amounts of money and years of effort with the hope of building a career in America. But if companies are reluctant to sponsor H1Bs due to such heavy costs, the opportunities for graduates may shrink drastically. This policy doesn’t just affect individuals — it impacts innovation, startups, and industries that rely on global talent. It risks closing the very doors that once made the US the hub of opportunity. #trump #hlb
