Jingyi Wu liked thisJingyi Wu liked thistl;dr I’ll be teaching at Columbia in the Fall! “But wait,” you say, “didn’t you just start teaching at Swarthmore a year ago?” Actually it was two years ago, but as much as I loved the students and my colleagues (and the Dining Center), I was in a “visiting” position that was always meant to be short-term, and now that Ina – sorry, “Dr. Ina Choi” – has finished her program at Penn, we figured it was time to move on. It’s been 15 years since I earned my PhD from Columbia, and returning now as a faculty member truly feels like “going home.” I am so excited to work alongside the instructors, mentors, and friends who helped make my time as a graduate student so formative for me. I also look forward to teaching and advising talented Columbia students, and to collaborating with dedicated TAs to create engaging and supportive classroom environments. Thank you to the folks in the Swat CS Department (especially the student members of the Advisory Council), Coalition on Well-being, Teaching & Learning Commons, and Thursday Narples lunch crowd for two memorable and fun years! I’ll miss you!

Multi-document Summarization System
* Designed and implemented a multi-document text summarization system, using NLP approaches to rank sentences according to their positions, specificity and topic words.
* Result on dev data reached a Rouge-2 recall of 0.092, beating the first-sentence baseline at 0.079. -
PennStudySpaces, an Android Application
* Built an Android App for searching and reserving study spaces on campus, managing reservation history, and keeping meeting records (text notes, speech-to-text notes, audio, photos).
* Used Google Map API, and Google Text-to-Speech API, SQLite to store history.

Distributed UDP Group-chatting System
* Established a real-time group chat system; user can start, join or leave a group.
* Implemented an efficient total-ordered and fault-tolerant broadcast protocol based on UDP. -
Functional Language Parser and Evaluator
* Implemented a parser and evaluator with a Repl that reads a program or function definitions in a given functional language defined in BNF, and evaluates expressions from user input.
* Recursive descent parsing; test-driven development with JUnit. -
C Program Compiler

* Developed a C program that reads in a file containing C code, creates a symbol table, and converts the instructions into assembly language.

Olympic Database Web Application

* Imported data from large XML files using xQuery; developed a Java program for data cleaning.
* Designed the database schema and optimized querying by creating views and indexes.
