About the Opportunity

Our client, a rapidly expanding special situations investment fund with multi-billion in AUM, is seeking a Management Company Assistant Controller to run and elevate the financial operations for the management company as the business continues its ambitious growth trajectory. This is a transformative role offering direct exposure to the COO/CFO and firm leadership, with the autonomy to design and implement the next-generation financial infrastructure. The position offers ownership of all aspects of the management company’s finance, accounting, and tax function, playing a vital role in building scalable processes and supporting a high-performing, entrepreneurial environment.


Job Responsibilities

  • Own and manage the management company’s books and records, overseeing monthly close, reconciliations, and preparation of financial statements in QuickBooks
  • Lead the evaluation, selection, and migration to an upgraded accounting system (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite), setting policies and internal controls for a more sophisticated platform
  • Manage tax compliance for the management company and affiliates, including federal, state, local filings, K-1s, estimated payments, and close coordination with outside tax preparers
  • Oversee compensation and payroll accounting, working with HR and the COO/CFO on salaries, bonus accruals, and partner distributions
  • Lead annual budgeting and regular forecasting; monitor actuals versus budget and flag/report variances to leadership
  • Prepare and deliver management reporting packages to the COO/CFO and partners; lead the annual management company audit
  • Collaborate across Fund Accounting, Operations, Legal, and Compliance; take ownership of ad hoc projects and process improvements
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and scalable financial reporting processes to ensure operational excellence
  • Maintain a builder’s mindset, driving continuous improvement and leveraging technology or automation tools
  • Partner with external auditors, tax advisors, and service providers as needed


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5–15 years of professional experience in management company or corporate accounting at an asset manager, or a blend of public accounting and industry experience (audit experience with management companies strongly valued)
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks, general ledger maintenance, month-end close, and financial statement preparation
  • Strong understanding of tax compliance relevant to management companies, including partnership taxation and multi-state filings
  • Experience in compensation accounting, payroll, and budget management
  • Demonstrated ability or prior experience in leading or participating in an accounting system migration or implementation project
  • Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with tools such as Python or SQL for automation/data analysis is a plus
  • Experience in the alternative investments industry (private credit, private equity, or special situations) preferred
  • Familiarity with management company/GP entity structures and intercompany allocations a plus
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with proven ability to manage competing priorities
  • Self-starter with analytical rigor, high accountability, builder mindset, and the drive to operate in a flat, entrepreneurial team


This position is based in New York City and generally requires four days per week in the office, with flexibility as needed.

The total compensation is up to $325,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.
