The Opportunity
Our client is a privately held, growth-oriented, multi-unit consumer services organization operating within a well-established franchise system. The company has expanded significantly through both organic development and acquisitions and is continuing to build the infrastructure required to support its next phase of growth.
The organization is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead its accounting function and strengthen the processes, controls, and reporting capabilities supporting a geographically dispersed portfolio of locations.
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will have responsibility for day-to-day accounting operations, the monthly close, financial reporting, internal controls, cash management, and the continued development of the accounting team.
This position is well suited for an accounting leader who has helped build, rebuild, or professionalize a controllership function within a growing organization. The successful candidate will be comfortable assessing an evolving accounting environment, identifying gaps, establishing priorities, and implementing practical, scalable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day accounting operations for a large and growing portfolio of independently operated locations.
- Own the monthly close process, including account reconciliations, journal entries, consolidations, and financial statement preparation.
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, cash management, and related accounting activities.
- Maintain accurate unit-level and consolidated financial reporting across a multi-location organization.
- Oversee the accounting and reconciliation of franchise-related obligations, including royalties, brand or marketing fund contributions, technology fees, and other recurring charges.
- Ensure franchise-related accounting activity is consistent with applicable franchise agreements and company policies.
- Assess existing accounting systems, processes, controls, and workflows; identify deficiencies and implement sustainable improvements.
- Strengthen internal controls and maintain a high level of audit readiness.
- Partner with operational leaders to improve the accuracy and consistency of location-level financial information.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, banking partners, and other professional service providers.
- Recruit, develop, and manage accounting team members as the organization continues to grow.
- Serve as a strategic and operational partner to the Chief Financial Officer and executive leadership team.
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- At least eight years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful controllership or senior accounting leadership responsibility.
- Direct experience working within a franchise business model is required. Candidates may come from either the franchisee or franchisor side of the industry.
- Strong understanding of franchise-related accounting, recurring fee structures, franchise agreements, and multi-location financial reporting.
- Experience supporting a multi-unit, brick-and-mortar retail, consumer services, hospitality, healthcare, fitness, restaurant, or comparable location-based organization.
- Demonstrated success building, rebuilding, or upgrading an accounting function within a growing or evolving company.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and close-management practices.
- Ability to operate effectively in an environment where systems and processes may not yet be fully mature.
- Resourceful, hands-on, and willing to work at both the strategic and transactional levels.
- Prior experience hiring, developing, and leading accounting professionals.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with finance, operations, and executive leadership.
Remote Work Requirements
This is a fully remote position. Candidates must reside in the Eastern or Central time zone and be able to work consistently during the company’s core business hours.
The successful candidate must have a professional home-office environment and be comfortable collaborating across multiple locations through video, telephone, messaging, and other communication platforms.
