The Highland Food Pantry and Highland Community Care provides a welcoming environment of food, faith and financial resources to individuals in a physical, emotional or spiritual crisis. We seek to improve the health and well-being of our neighbors by delivering a dignified food shopping experience through a client-choice food pantry, increasing healthy food options and providing opportunities for growth and development through various self-sufficiency settings. The VISTA role itself will focus on non-religious capacity-building activities related to food security and poverty alleviation. The VISTA should will not be assigned to religious instruction, worship, or proselytization. This program works closely with the Abilene/Big County Hunger Coalition, Food Pantry, community gardents, and soup kitchens. This role will help build capacity through the developement of education, grant writing, finding new partnerships, and increasing stakeholder interest to ensure the long term sustainiabilty of these programs.

Member Duties : The VISTA would build organizational capacity & long-term sustainability by developing systems, partnerships, and resources that strengthen food security initiatives. They would support the Coalition’s Free Summer, Winter, and Spring Meals Program by creating implementation tools, strengthening community partnerships, & establishing sustainable processes for participating organizations. They would develop nutrition education toolkits & best-practice resources to increase access to healthy foods. They would research innovative food resource management strategies & create planning tools to improve program effectiveness. For the Community Garden, the VISTA would identify infrastructure improvements, recruit community stakeholders, develop sustainability plans, & research best practices for year-round growing. They would help formalize the Teacher’s Closet by creating operational plans, partnership strategies, volunteer systems, & resource development plans to support long-term success.
