Check is far more than just API infrastructure. We’re a springboard for building and scaling payroll businesses.

About This Role

As a Tech Lead Manager at Check, you'll be responsible for turning complex, high-impact problems into solutions that help over a million people get paid. You'll act as both a manager, leader, and force multiplier both by doing the work and amplifying the work of our team. Through your close partnership with product and operations, you'll define the roadmap and workflow improvements that will help our business (and the businesses that rely on Check's infrastructure) reach the next stage of growth.

What You'll Do

  • Scale systems that power payroll calculations, tax payments, and filings as volume and complexity increase.
  • Design services that move and reconcile money across parties, while making results clear and traceable for partners.
  • Support new businesses as they migrate large employer bases onto Check's infrastructure.
  • Use AI to automate complex operational workflows, such as tax notice triage and reducing manual employer setup work.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience building complex software and delivering production systems end-to-end
  • 1-2 years of experience leading or managing a team
  • A desire to continue being hands-on and building with your team
  • A track record of driving business outcomes as well as upleveling IC engineers around you
  • Passion for improving engineering workflows and experimenting with AI
  • While we don't have requirements for programming languages, a desire to learn our current stack is required: Python/Django, React, Typescript, AWS, Terraform, Postgres, Temporal, Github.

Engineering Culture at Check

At Check, engineering operates as one team. Engineers are staffed based on business priorities, not tied to fixed domains. Engineers stay close to the work and to each other’s decisions. The team is small and operates with a high level of ownership. Work does not sit waiting on ownership boundaries, and people step in to move things forward when something is stuck.

Travel & Office Policy

The Check team is distributed across the US. Roles can be remote, hybrid, or based in one of our offices in New York City or San Francisco. We offer ample opportunities and encourage employees to attend team offsites, events, and hackathons throughout year. All Checketeers gather in the spring for our annual 3-day company retreat.

For our in-office and hybrid employees, our offices are open all week. We provide meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays and there are regular happy hours, game nights, and other in-person events.

Remote work at Check requires the ability to perform all responsibilities without distraction or disruption, while maintaining quality, effective communication, and productivity.
