Despite a tube strike and a very “British summer” evening of showers, we had a fantastic turnout yesterday for F𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 hosted by 100 Women In Finance in collaboration with the British Business Bank and Osborne Clarke A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such an engaged and candid room. Participants feedback was incredibly positive, particularly around how practical the insights were. That was exactly my intent: to move beyond high-level encouragement and create a conversation about what it takes to raise, structure and manage a first fund. A big thank you to our brilliant panellists: Jeannine Daniel, CEO, Cara Advisory Limited Camilla Dolan, GP, Eka Ventures Richard Hoskins, CEO, Kin Group Honor Huyette, CEO, Alke Capital Partners Helen Parsonage, Partner, Osborne Clarke And to Ulrika Robertsson, 100WF Board Member and Liz Bailey, Development Equity funds Director at the BBB, for their opening remarks. A few key takeaways from the event: 🔹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗚𝗣𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁. Managers should plan for a long journey: often 24 months and manage energy, runway, relationships and momentum accordingly. 🔹 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁. Managers need to translate their edge into a fundable proposition: clear portfolio construction, realistic fund size, evidence of access, credible proof points, alignment of interest and a story LPs can underwrite. 🔹 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸. Legal structure, administration, investor onboarding, regulatory cover, data rooms and service provider selection are not “back office” details. They are part of the investor experience and can either build or undermine LP confidence. 🔹 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗟𝗣 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹. GPs need to do due diligence on LPs too: understand mandate, cheque size, decision process, appetite for emerging managers and likely timelines before spending time on conversations that may never convert. 🔹 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗣𝘀, 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. Panels, networks and showcases have value, but only if they connect to practical support: serious LP engagement, transparent feedback, warm introductions, early believers, cornerstone capital and fairer assessment of non-traditional track records. Last night reinforced that there is real appetite for more candid, actionable allocator lens advice on what LPs actually look for before committing capital. I will continue sharing reflections and practical guidance for emerging managers preparing to raise, launch and institutionalise their funds. 📣 to my emerging and scaling GP connections, let me know what is keeping you up at night and would like to know more about.
