Five weeks into my Governance Officer role, and I have to say, I absolutely love it.
I never saw myself working in governance. It was not the direction I expected my career to take. Yet now I am here, I see how meaningful, challenging and important this work is.
In a short space of time, I have learnt so much. I have evolved in how I think, how I ask questions, how I understand decision-making, and how I see the link between structure, accountability and good outcomes.
Governance is much more than meetings, papers and minutes. Done well, it creates clarity. It protects decision-making. It gives people confidence. It helps organisations move forward with purpose.
My top 4 governance tips so far:
1. Know the purpose
Every meeting, paper and decision should have a clear purpose. Ask, “What are we trying to achieve?” If the answer is unclear, the process needs tightening.
2. Keep records clear
Good governance relies on evidence. Clear agendas, minutes, actions and decision logs help people understand what was agreed, why it was agreed and what happens next.
3. Separate discussion from decision
Not every conversation needs a formal decision. Be clear about whether the group is being asked to note, discuss, endorse, recommend or approve.
4. Follow through
Governance only works when actions move forward. Track decisions, check progress and close the loop. That is where assurance becomes real.
I am also incredibly fortunate to be part of a fantastic team. My manager has been absolutely brilliant, supportive, clear and generous with her knowledge. My colleagues have been welcoming, patient and genuinely great to work with.
Five weeks in, I feel energised, stretched and grateful. I have found a role I did not expect, in an area I did not fully understand before, and I now cannot get enough of it.
Governance matters. Good governance matters even more.
I am looking forward to learning, contributing and growing further in this space.
