K&L Gates partner Divesh Patel speaks with Mergermarket reporter Mansi G. about the increased M&A deal activity in Australia's radiology sector. With private equity firms leading the charge, 2025 is shaping up to be a record year for deal volume. Key trends Divesh highlights include: 🔄 Portfolio turnover: Many PE-held radiology assets are nearing or exceeding typical holding periods, prompting divestment activity. 🏥 Doctor-led buyouts: Clinicians may increasingly seek to buy out PE stakes, especially if private credit is readily available. The sector’s strong fundamentals – government support, demographic tailwinds, and tech-driven efficiencies – make it one to watch heading into 2026. Are private equity firms buying less… but bigger? The $18.3 billion take-private of Hologic by Blackstone and TPG is one of the year’s largest healthcare deals. Why the buy? because - Hologic, Inc., a $4-4.5B medical devices company, sitting at the intersection of stability and purpose - a global leader focused on improving women’s health through early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. - steady cash flows - proven technology - a trusted brand In an uncertain market, that’s gold for investors seeking resilient assets with long-term value. When purpose meets profit, investors listen. The deal also highlights a bigger trend: 1) Are PE firms buying less, but bigger? More caution, consolidation, and focus. 2) Does bigger mean better returns? At 13× EBITDA, execution has to be flawless. 3) Are mega-funds now blurring the line between private equity and corporate strategy? So what’s next? An era of fewer, bolder bets? Or a comeback of mid-market creativity once rates ease? Would love to hear your views! #PrivateEquity #MedicalDevice #LifeSciences #MergersAndAcquisitions #Leadership

Great post, Alex. In ophthalmology, success in M&A is less about size and more about fit. EssilorLuxottica illustrates this with channel and retail acquisitions like GrandVision, while Zeiss often targets niche diagnostic and surgical innovators. Both show that the smartest deals fill capability gaps and address long-term clinical needs rather than chasing scale.
