🦈 Shark Awareness Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate an exciting step forward for shark research collaborations in England. I'm delighted that the University of Exeter has secured funding from Natural England to lead a major new research project investigating three of our most vulnerable shark species – blue shark, porbeagle and tope – and even more pleased that the Angling Trust will be part of the partnership delivering it alongside The Marine Biological Association and the Pat Smith Database. For years, recreational sea anglers and charter skippers have been gathering observations and building an incredible understanding of these species through time spent on the water. This project recognises the value of that knowledge, combining it with cutting-edge tracking technology and scientific research to answer some of the biggest questions about where these sharks travel, breed and how best to conserve them. By bringing together researchers, anglers and skippers, we'll be helping to build the evidence needed to improve conservation, identify important habitats and develop best-practice catch-and-release guidance to support healthy shark populations for the future. It's a great example of how science and recreational angling can work together to deliver better outcomes for our marine environment. What happens when a superyacht becomes a platform for science? Earlier this year, aboard M/Y Solace, an extraordinary collaboration between EYOS Expeditions, Yachts for Science, researchers and an engaged owner helped document one of the largest known gatherings of humpback whales ever recorded at the Navidad Bank in the Dominican Republic. Over the course of the expedition, researchers documented more than 500 humpback whales, contributing valuable observations to a breeding ground that has seen remarkably little dedicated scientific study over the past 45 years. The work combined rigorous field science with citizen science, demonstrating what is possible when private expedition platforms are thoughtfully integrated into research programs. When owners, crews, scientists and expedition leaders align around a common purpose, private yachts can become powerful platforms for conservation, discovery and education—unlocking places, access and operational flexibility that traditional research programs often cannot. The HiDef Fieldwork Diaries: Foula - Scotland’s Bird Island 🐦🌊 At the beginning of June, the HiDef team travelled to Foula, one of the UK's most remote permanently inhabited islands, to carry out seabird surveys. Located 20 miles west of Shetland and home to just 30 residents, Foula certainly lives up to its Old Norse name, 'Fuglaey' meaning 'Bird Island'. Over the course of a week, the team completed whole-island counts of guillemot, razorbill, fulmar, shag, kittiwake, great skua, Arctic skua, and Arctic tern. With no vehicles on the island, every survey was completed on foot across some of the UK's highest sea cliffs and Shetland's rugged hills meaning plenty of miles (and steps!) each day. Despite the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, the team successfully completed every survey. There was still time for a little friendly competition in the evenings, with a fiercely contested Jenga championship and plenty of laughs over a picture drawing game! The surveys also highlighted the importance of continuing long-term monitoring, with initial results suggesting seabird numbers on Foula continue to decline, particularly great skua (bonxies). A special thank you goes to Sheila Gear, a true Foula legend, who has been surveying the island's birds for more than 60 years. At over 80 years old, Sheila was still outpacing the team on the hills and sharing her incredible knowledge of Foula's wildlife. She even handcrafted bonxie-proof headgear to help protect the team from some very determined aerial attacks! We're incredibly proud of the team's dedication and the valuable data they're collecting to help improve our understanding of Scotland's seabird populations.
