This incredible demonstration shows Boston Dynamics' Spot robot, named Fausto/Zephyr, performing autonomous tire handling, a feat well beyond the robot arm's official lifting capacity. The Robotics and AI Institute (RAI Institute) achieved this by combining Reinforcement Learning (RL) with sampling-based optimization. This advanced approach teaches the quadruped to leverage its entire body—legs, torso, and arm—for dynamic, challenging tasks like rolling and stacking 15kg (33 lb) tires. Notice how it balances, rolls the tire like a wheelbarrow, and precisely places it for a perfect stack. This is a massive step forward for industrial automation.
