New: Cloudberry, a new VC firm based in Helsinki and London, has closed €30m for its first-time fund to back European startups tackling the bottlenecks faced by the semiconductor industry. Semiconductors underpin all of modern computing, from powering electric vehicles to enabling AI models to run in data centres. But as the devices get smaller, with compute requirements increasing at pace, they are set to reach their physical limits. Scaling the production of traditional semiconductors to meet the growing needs of computing will soon be insufficient, especially in the age of chips-hungry AI. “It means we are rethinking everything,” says Cloudberry cofounder Lawrence Lundy. “When you think of semiconductors you think of one specific material, silicon, and one specific design. We’re moving to a world where we could have a variety of designs and materials: photonics, analog, neuromorphic computing, in-memory compute, and so on.” Cloudberry will back startups across the stack, from companies building specific chip-making equipment to those developing and new architectures and materials for the devices.
