Hi Debbie. We have the same issue in Scotland but what people are realising is that it isn’t a restriction in the grid but a lack of flexible customers who can ramp up when there is too much and down when there is less. This is why it’s so important to get big heat pumps into the system.

Debbie - couldn’t resist not responding to your comment. Here’s a thought - If we could connect large storage to the grid to store all the available and wasted electricity and release it when electricity is most expensive we reduce the cost of energy. (Load sharing.) NIEN regulation doesn’t allow it but private investor could own the storage / generator if given grid access like a power station and charge users at a lower price for electricity that has been supplied from the surplus available from wind generation. What do you think?

Hi Debbie, this looks very interesting. We carried out a very similar type of curtailment reduction analysis with @MullanGrid a couple of years ago. We followed this up with some analysis on the contribution to grid stability (balancing and frequency response) that TES can make with a further study with Enel X which just finished this year. This study also included step-by-step guidance for heat asset owners, a Policy and Market roadmap for TES deployment in Ireland. You are likely to hit the same challenges as we are facing in Edinburgh due to geography. Wind power is available in remoter areas where it’s generated. Heat is needed in urban centres. So it depends where your grid bottlenecks are and whether you can get affordable electricity to consumers that can utilise and benefit from flexible tariffs (as Dave P stresses). You may also need to install large scale heat transmission highways over long distances. To do this you will need major gov infrastructure investment plus national or regional utility scale implementators and solid industry regulation to do this. I would argue this appetite for investment and level of maturity in the heat network sector doesn’t exist in the UK..yet. Absolutely use it locally for heating and cooling. Strategic assets like hospitals, social housing, industry and of course universities and colleges.
