Trust is the hidden currency of AI adoption, and right now, the tech industry is running a trust deficit. We can’t expect communities to embrace AI when many of the people building and deploying it don’t reflect, understand, or have relationships with the communities they’re trying to reach. If you show up on the South Side of Chicago, in Brooklyn, or in any community without authentic local relationships, you’re not automatically viewed as an innovator. You’re an outsider who hasn’t yet earned trust. A few realities worth remembering: • Trust doesn’t scale. It can’t be coded into a model or purchased with a marketing budget. It’s built through consistency, presence, and partnership. • The messenger matters. People often decide whether to engage with AI based on who introduces it—not just what it can do. • Communities should shape the future, not just consume it. When people are included as co-creators, AI becomes something built with them instead of for them. I came to RAISE Summit expecting conversations about the next generation of AI. I left thinking about something far more fundamental: who gets to build it. One of the most compelling sessions of the summit was the conversation between Arthur Mensch and Mark Surman. Their message went well beyond open-source software. It was about the future of innovation, competition and sovereignty. If AI becomes concentrated in the hands of a few, so will value creation, decision-making and influence. Open AI isn't just a technical model—it's a way to ensure that innovation remains competitive, accessible and resilient. That conversation stayed with me throughout the summit. Because openness isn't only about code. It's also about people. Who gets invited into the room. Who gets a seat at the table. Whose perspectives shape the technologies that will impact all of us. Being part of the RAISE Women in AI Delegation made that connection impossible to ignore. Building a more open AI ecosystem also means building a more diverse one. I've been thinking about a different model for the AI economy: community-owned cooperative organizations that give people the opportunity to collectively invest in AI infrastructure, participate in AI innovation, and use AI to solve local challenges. Imagine communities working together to build AI systems that help: Improve education and workforce development Support local businesses and entrepreneurs Strengthen healthcare and public services Improve energy efficiency and sustainability Assist nonprofits and community organizations Support disaster preparedness and recovery Create new economic opportunities Help communities make better data-driven decisions The goal isn't simply to build more AI—it's to build AI that creates value for the people and communities using it. By combining cooperative ownership with responsible AI and other advanced technologies, communities could have a greater voice in shaping how these tools are developed and deployed to address local needs. Technology has the potential to improve lives when it is designed with people at the center. I believe exploring community-centered models for AI is an important conversation for the years ahead.
