New research: cancer patients in England face a postcode lottery in post-treatment psychological support. Future Dreams has today published new findings from Freedom of Information requests to 81 NHS Trusts providing acute cancer care across England. The results reveal significant inconsistency in survivorship support once active treatment ends: ▪ 48% of Trusts have no formal survivorship pathway that includes psychological support ▪ 15% report no post-treatment support at all ▪ Formal survivorship pathways range from 88% of Trusts in the South West to just 20% in the East of England ▪ 22% of Trusts impose formal time limits on psychological support This matters because the need for support often doesn't align with when treatment ends. In Future Dreams' own research, 76% of users surveyed sought emotional support more than two years after completing primary treatment. As Sam Jacobs, CEO of Future Dreams, notes: "Survivorship support must become a core part of cancer care rather than something patients have to navigate alone." With the Government currently developing its National Cancer Plan — which includes a commitment to personalised support plans covering emotional and practical needs beyond treatment — this is a critical moment to ensure survivorship care is properly resourced and standardised across England.
